The legalisation of gay marriage and heterosexual civil partnerships

An issue which I would like to see Mumsnet throw its weight behind is the legalisation of gay marriage and heterosexual civil partnerships.

Recently, the coalition government announced a consultation on marriage equality, however progress is very slow.

If Mumsnet were to campaign about marriage equality, it would help put pressure on the government to speed up the consultation and make it harder for them to backtrack.

A good website for more information on this issue is Equal Love.

Nice website. Personally, I like the arrangement that a few other countries have where everyone has to have a civil partnership/wedding for it to be legal. People can have a religious one at another point but that has no effect on the couples legal status. To me, that seems to be the most equal and fair arrangement.

Encouragingly, Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond has recently declared support for gay marriage. Both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have also previously expressed support for marriage equality.

I'll join that campaign! Dp suggested I signed us up which I have accepted as a proposal of civil partnership. Oh, the romance of it all....
