I have just read in the local paper that matalan are selling children's bras starting at size 28aa from £4.50!

I have just read checked out the campaign section of this website and see that matalan arenot part of the let girls be girls campaign but thought I would let others know that they have started selling children's bras.

I was in a 28AA at 9 because it was the smallest size. I was still a 28 back at 19 when I had my breats reduced. I was a 28HH. At 35 and 3 kids later, I am still only a 30 back. They should make them smaller IMO.

Just looked at the article.

It has made me really angry.

How do they work out that 28AA is the size of an eight year old?

I know some young adults who are that size.

And idiotic comments like this one just make my blood boil:

"Sadly there will be an element of idiotic mothers who will buy these - the same mothers who encourage their daughters to aspire to be Page 3 models and want breast enhancing operations in their teens."

Poor poor little girls who have developing breasts and need a bra.

It's not like they're red lace push up ones.

I wonder if there would be so much media outrage if they were made of old sacking. Its just slagging off women/girls again for wanting their clothes to be nice because after all, if you're wearing a bra with a pattern on it then it must be to please the boys and you are asking for it. Twats.

where does it say 6 yr olds clayre?

sophis · 25/04/2011 23:57

what a load of old bull. they are clearly aimed at young girls so don't gimmie any of that crap, its in the childrens department! like the swimwear outrage padded bra that was on the news-it was a fact that it was for children, the store said it was, and it was padded.

these bras are not for developing girls-hence 28 AA!! thats not developing at all no offense to anyone, and by padding them it enchances the breasts rather than supports them. they shouldnt be padded is the point because it makes them that bit bigger.

i remember being 28 aa age 10 or something and i wore non padded bras to cover budding nipples, cos thats all u start off with and dont want them to be seen through tops, the last thing i would have wanted to do would be to make them appear bigger as i was self concious about them growing and trying to get used to it myself, however i appreciate thats not ness how everyone feels, esp not these days in the sick society of boob jobs we've created or been americanised an usual, do we have to follow everything they do? or can we get our nose out of their arses for once and start thinking british again!

i still think it is encouraging the appearance of more breast than there actually is on young children or teens. but if your happy with your 8 year old attracting peodos then go for it, why not splash out and get the the full works as well, high heels for 4-5 year olds and pimp em out on the street!
well its all there in the shops for u to buy.

piprabbit · 26/04/2011 00:07

Matalan's children's range goes up to age 13. I was wearing a bra from age 11, so would have been looking for exactly this sort of product.

None of the bras on the Matalan website are padded. They are all basically little bits of jersey fabric.

I think people are looking to be outraged, and getting in a lather about not very much.

lilolilmanchester · 26/04/2011 00:26

Am very anti the early sexualisation of children - but 28 aa is a reasonable size for bra, no matter what age...... and there is "padding" (ie to disguise protruding buds) and "padding" (to make boobs look bigger..) .. so appreciate your good intentions clayre, just be clear what your issue actually is

GypsyMoth · 26/04/2011 01:14

there is no issue here fgs!!! kids are developing earlier.....my own teens did!! my 14 yr old is bigger than me and she started developing early!!!

what are we supposed to do with these early developers to keep the campaign brigade happy!!?? my 8/9 yr old girls needed bra's.....sorry if that doesnt conform with your ideas!! and i'm not alone

gorionine · 26/04/2011 06:22

DD1 is 11 she wears a 28aa I think the papers might have got it wrong if advertised for 6yo. DD1 is skinny but still larger than most 6 yo I have seen so farSmile

MackerelOfFact · 26/04/2011 07:48

Marks and Spencer and John Lewis also sell this size... I don't really see the problem, nor why it is being assumed they are aimed a pre-teens. 28AA is an actual adult size, albeit a small one - it's a bit like being outraged that you can buy thongs in size 6 because they might fit a 12-year-old. They well might but that's not the point. And these bras are totally inoffensive - pastel colours with full cups which are not see-through in any way.

hogsback · 26/04/2011 08:03

Sophis because of course it's all the Americans fault as usual isn't it. I'm sick and tired of any seeming society ill in this country being blamed on 'Americanisation'. MN threads on this kind of thing always end up blaming the poor bloody yanks - you wouldn't say the same about gypsies or Jews would you, well perhaps you would...

nobetterthanthat · 26/04/2011 08:25

Sophis are you seriously suggesting that pubescent girls who wear underwear 'are asking for it'. Is it better for them to have unsupported breasts that can be plainly seen through their flimsy school shirts? Perhaps you think girls should be kept out of sight from puberty to adulthood then, if they have the audacity to wear underwear it will be open season on their bodies from sex attackers who target adults, but thats ok, because if they had dressed properly then it wouldn't have happened Hmm.

Blaming women and girls for their own rape because they possess both a female body and female underwear is twisted.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/04/2011 08:48

I've just played MN bingo with Sophis's post and won. If only she had mentioned bf Nazis and Madeleine McCann I'd have had the full set. Wink

GypsyMoth · 26/04/2011 09:11
