Supermarket shopping with a pushchair

I was told yesterday by Sainsbury's head office that their policy is that you must use a shopping basket or trolley when shopping in their stores, even if you are pushing a double pushchair with 2 children in it and therefore can't hold a bulky, rigid shopping basket full of groceries comfortably.

I did consider the possibility of transferring the children into a shopping trolley so that I could go in to get my groceries but there is no secure storage provided for pushchairs.

Could Mumsnet help to organise a campaign for either secure pushchair storage at supermarkets or shopping baskets which can comfortably be dangled from a wrist when pushing a pushchair (i.e. fabric handles)?

Yes it was just a couple of bits JustAnotherManicMummy, eggs and baby breakfast cereal in this case!

TBH Morrisons is usually cheaper and is more convenient for me so the fact that I won't ever be returning to Sainsbury's is not really a big problem for me in itself, I just don't feel that the status quo is satisfactory for either the supermarkets or the parents trying to shop with pushchairs.

A simple solution like changing the design of the supermarket baskets or providing a way for us to secure our pushchairs whilst using a trolley would make life so much more comfortable and really shouldn't be that difficult to implement!

Don't know if you've ever tried pushing a P&T laden down with over 3 stone in weight of children, nappy change bag, rain cover etc. etc. Firawla? I'm probably a complete weakling but I can't do it one handed at the best of times and definitely not whilst carrying a shopping basket in the other hand...

I've had a stab at creating a facebook group (Snappily titled "Supermarkets should make it easier for people to shop with pushchairs"), hopefully get some kind of positive action taken by the supermarkets as a result.

I'm glad i've come across this! I'll look up your facebook group. I was in tesco the other week & i was using my SHOPPING bag for my shopping. The security guy came up close behind me looking in my bag & i told him i'm not planning on stealing anything. He told me in a lovely patronising voice that he was just doing his job. I was furious. I paid for my items & stormed out with only half of what i wanted. I wrote an angry letter saying i'm sure any intelligent adult could assess the situation at a distance, not harass me when i'm choosing tomatoes & 'do his job' if i try to leave without paying. I said at the time i'm sure i'm not the first or the last mother to do this. Ffs! Anyhow, can anyone suggest a buggy thats good for keeping my shopping in (paid for lol), my prams crap for walking round town with.

Just been back to the store. I used one of their trolleys with the baby, i got £30 worth & they asked to see my receipt when i was leaving!! I'd been chatting away with the woman behind the kiosk, because they'd been looking after my pram. Packed my shopping in front of them & then they do that! I shouted at them & told them they can f'king ban me. I wasn't going to show them my receipt!
