What were your multiples' estimated weights and actual weights?

Recent threads on here have made me wonder if anyone has a vaguely accurate estimated weight for their twins/triplets.
When I have my scans (36 weeks today) I try to disregard the estimated weights they give, but I can't quite stop myself calculating the weight gain per week and what they might be if I get to 38 weeks etc.

How far out have everyone else's weights been?

I can't tell you yet - twins currently estimated at 5lb each at 33 weeks, due for delivery at 36... which would make them pretty good sizes of approx 7lb each pre-term. But I had an interesting conversation with a senior sonographer about this the other day. She said they are actually reasonably accurate, especially done frequently. I was disputing this because DS was estimated at 8.5lbs at 36 weeks, born at 42 at nearly 13lbs... by the half a pound a week rule he should have been more like 11/11.5lbs... (so still a whopper ). But she said - if they are 'big' at 35 wks they tend to put on more than half a pound a week and if they are smaller then it will be less... hence frequent scanning and estimates more likely to be accurate on their predicition. Who knows?! The only thing she did say is that at this stage (33 wks yesterday) they will start showing their size difference from singletons, just by being twins. Unlike singletons twins can't grow as much in the last few weeks due to room, but they tend to have a spurt about 30-33 weeks when singletons would still be plodding along. That would tie in with what I've read about twins developing gestationally faster than singletons ie. term being less than 40 weeks, and their lungs etc being adequately developed for that. Will be interesting to see what happens!

My first twin out was about 6 oz heavier than predicted at 38 weeks. My 2nd about 8oz.
They were 5lb 7 and 5lb 8oz at birth.

chopstheduck · 04/12/2009 17:25

cant remember the figures but estimates were around 1lb bigger for each of them. Was quite surprised at how little they were when they were born.

snorris · 04/12/2009 17:41

Mine were predicted to be 5-6 lbs at birth and were actually 6lb 8oz and 7lb 3!!

firsttimetwins · 04/12/2009 20:01

Mine were estimated at 5lbs and 6lbs at 31 weeks, born at 32 at 3lbs 12 and 4 lbs 11, so quite a bit off.

kdk · 04/12/2009 21:06

Wouldn't want to swear it in court but think the estimates for mine weren't too way off - around 6lb-odd and in the event, he was 6lb 9 and she was 7lb 12.

poorbuthappy · 04/12/2009 22:26

With firsttimetwins on this 1...girls estimated at over 6 lb each day before they were born...they were 3lb 14 and 4lb 5.

They also got dd1 hugely wrong too...

Tortington · 04/12/2009 22:28

predicted 5-6 lbs

actual
6.6 & 7.5

good news is my fanjo recovered

curiositykilledhaskittens · 04/12/2009 23:23

I think the scans are totally wrong actually! One of my friends was told her baby was worryingly small and possibly growth restricted (singleton) and she was 10lbs!!!! I was told DD was small for gestational age and she was 7lbs.

My consultant didn't do estimated weights in my twin pg beyond 30 weeks because she said they were very unreliable and didn't want them to influence my care. She says they are normally 15-20% out.

kathryn2804 · 04/12/2009 23:56

Interesting curiosity!

Mine were estimated at over 4lbs, they came out way over at 6lb 10 and 5 lb 12 !!

idobelieveinfairies · 06/12/2009 08:44

Mine grew the most in the middle trimester..i can't remember what weights they were at 32 weeks but they were on the centile graph to be over 9lb each if they kept growing at the rate they were.

Their weight gain did slow right down and they were 7lb 12 and 7lb 5 and a half ozs at birth.

DS2's weight estimate was spot on at 10lb at birth but ds3's weight estimate was wrong ..he was thought to be over 10lb and so was induced at 40 weeks and he was only 8lb 5!!

bagpuss · 06/12/2009 19:05

At 32 week scan mine were estimated to be over 4 and a half pounds each but they were born 3 days later at 3 lbs 12 oz and 3 lbs 15 oz.

HuwEdwards · 06/12/2009 19:08

estimated, 7lb 5oz

Real, 13lb 8oz

1stMrsF · 09/12/2009 11:02

Can't remember the estimated weight exactly but it was about 7lb each (and almost exactly the same) their actual weights were DT1 7lb 6oz and DT2 6lb 12oz, so they weren't far off.
