Twin newborns in single pram / carry cot?

Anyone ever tried it and of so how long did they still fit? Am in the which double/triple buggy dilemma stage (2 yr old and twins due nov) and got to wondering whether I could just pop them both in my single carry cot for 3 months or so then get a lighter weight buggy or phil n teds or something. All the other proper twin doubles seem either heavy or wide! There's no perfect one. What do you think? Would that work?

Kinda depends how big they are! They could be 2 normal sized babies and won't be happy squashed in a carrycot. Mine were 6.8 and 7.7. Prems prob fine for a few months though. Course you're not going to know until they appear. P&T not going to work until they're 8-9 months at least due to the lack of recline although I'm looking at one now for my 10mo dt's. If you want to do this, then have a double that you want to buy from the website lined up so it can be delivered next day!

What's the dilemma about the double precisely?

Just going to point out that the width of a single carrycot is going to be 35cm AT MOST.

I didn't have a carry cot, but they shared a moses basket for about 6 weeks or so. They were only 5.7 and 5.12lbs at birth, so quite diddy and they filled the moses basket. So given that a carrycot is smaller than a moses basket, I'm not sure it would be very comfortable.

I had a nipper - although it's a side by side, it's quite narrow and it fitted through my narrow Victorian terrace front door. It's also incredibly light - weighed less than my M&P single buggy. DD1 was 20 months when DTs were born and initially I had the smaller DT in a sling with DD1 and DT2 in the buggy. When they were a bit bigger, DD1 used to walk some of the way and then get a lift on the hood of the buggy when she got tired (she was/is quite light for her age though). You can put a buggy board on many double buggies or there's a thing which is a bit like a little bike, which attaches to the side of the buggy...I'm racking my brains trying to remember what it's called . If I think of it, I'll come back and let you know.

I think the bike is called a strolli. A woman at school has one attached to her m&p aria for her 2yo, seems to work well. I was thinking about getting one too.

I think I would have only put my two in single carrycot for first week or two, after that they would have been a bit squashed. Esp as in November they will need snowsuit type things / cosytoes or whatever to keep warm.

I started out with a Powertwin so I could get through my front door when DTs were younger, and have now got double Nipper which is a lot lighter and easier to push, but is a pain as I have to get them out of the pushchair before folding pushchair and getting it in front door / car boot.

When did / does your older child turn two? My DS1 was 22 months when my twins were born and I let him go in the pushchair for the majority of the time and carried smallest twin (DD) in sling for months. In hindsight I could and should have got DS1 to walk more earlier as I carried DD in sling for a year whilst pushing a double buggy (we never drive anywhere so a lot of walking), but I felt bad for him being shoved out to walk when his brother and sister arrived and thought he might get resentful / sad!

Nipper is great as your older DC can sit on footrest at front (depends how old they are though, not sure I would have felt confident with my DS1 sitting on there before about 2.5 but he sits there still fine now at 3.5 and it is still easy to push with ONE HAND )!

I did also discover that you can lie the older one across the hood in times of need (had to do it with DS1 during a major tantrum to get him home the other day).

Have not tried a Strolli but did/do have a Buggypod Smorph and it was hideous when I had it on my Powertwin (it was great in theory, and DS1 loved it, but such a bugger to push, and it made it want to tip over more).

I used that trick with my single MB urban a lot too Egg but when I try it now both the 5yo and 2yo want to hop on and I can't manage that! The strolli does seem quite well designed and more importantly the little boy loves it!

We've looked at the nipper and it does look excellent ESP if dd1 can sit on that front bit occasionally. Just concerned about it being so wide in narrow village shops etc. Brill to hear a toddler can perch on the hood tho. She's just 2 but quite diddy only about 26lbs.

Was the powertwin good? Also wondered about iCandy pear but it seems so heavy and nowhere for dd1 to perch. Sadly I can't manage a sling for a twin as I have back problems. Barely managed dd1 for 6 wks in sling and back much worse these days.

I know it sounds mad but why not measure the doorway of a couple of nearby shops?

I had a powertwin when my two were a bit older. Tbh I found it much more unwieldy than the nipper, particularly going up and down kerbs - it used to tip quite alarmingly easily.

Don't know how big the new model Nipper is, but the old one was 73cm wide [sad, anally retentive emoticon] .

A friend has the iCandy pear...it is lovely but it is quite long and you're right, there's nowhere for a toddler. Not sure if a buggy board would fit on it either.

mine were 5lb and 5.12lb when they were born and I had them in a single Quinny carrycot for a good few weeks but it got too small quite quickly. Then they moved in to the Nipper double, with the newborn supports round them. The Nipper did them for ages and was great - light, narrow, easy to steat one handed, easy to bump up kerbs and I put a kiddyboard on it for DD! But I found when the were older about 2yrs they weren't comfy enough as the seats are a bit buckety and they wanted to be sitting more upright. Luckily I was offered a twin Maclaren stroller on Freecycle which was perfect. Now (they are 3.5yrs) I use my single stroller with a buggy board if I take all three DC out.
