...how old was your other child when they learned to tell the twins apart?

My DTs are nearly 1. Although they're identical, DH and I can see the difference between them easily, but our 3 y/o DD can't yet. Not a problem - she's very young and her sisters are too little to realise anyway! But just wondered what sort of age she'll be able to tell them apart.

From birth, I've not heard of a sibling not being able to tell the difference, in general very young children who are not part of the family can tell twins apart and it's not until they are older that they start to see them as twins.

My DP is 2 years older than his identical twin brothers, he could tell them apart straight away. Recently, when we were looking at photos of them as newborns he knew who was who instantly even though he'd only have been 2 at that time.

Wow, I'd not even thought about that (identical twins due in 4/5 weeks). I've talked about it with DH about how we will know which one is which, I'm now really embarrassed that I hadn't even considered discussing this with my 4yo DD arrrrrrgh twins are such a minefield! So many things I haven't considered

Hi just to put your mind at ease a bit, my eldest who was just turned 3 when my twins were born struggled with this. I think she was about 6 when she started to recognise them properly, although she can still have trouble now at 7. I'd say it was because she wasn't that interested in them as people up until that point, at three they became more like friends for her and she started to socialise with them a bit more and therefore saw their mannerisms and small differences in their faces. I dont particularly think its a problem, just that she was distracted by other things up until that point, she was never one for playing with dolls either

My siblings never had a problem telling myself and my twin apart, my dad on the other hand still struggles and we are now 44...........

Lol my father never could tell us apart! He just said a random name with a 50% chance of getting it right...

@Tootletum I’m not a twin and my dad still might use my name, sister’s name, mam’s name, or sister in law’s name in any given conversation. 🤷‍♀️
