More folic acid with twins?

I found out yesterday at 7+5 that I'm expecting twins. Does anybody know if I need to double the amount of folic acid that I'm taking? I can't find an answer on the NHS and the number for the midwife is just ringing out.

My consultant told me to take double but only from 14 weeks when we found out we were having twins.

Congratulations, my twins are 7 now.

Interestingly I was told to just stick with the normal amount but maybe to take iron! Going to have another chat with them this week but am now over 12 wks anyway. Found out at 10+5

I wasn’t told to take any extra folic acid but was told to take iron, I used spatone liquid iron and they were really impressed with my iron levels.

I was told to take extra folic acid when I found out I was expecting twins after the 12 week scan. One twin was born with a cleft lip and subsequently having done a bit of research, although researchers are not conpletely sure what causes clefts, a lack of folic acid before 12 weeks might be a cause. A bit like spina bifida. I haven’t heard of any major complications of taking too much folic acid so I would probably err on the side of caution and go for more rather than less.

I took 5mg due to cleft lip/palette and spina bifida. It's prescription only though so you will need to ask for it but you can never have too much. I have a singleton (nearly 3) and twin girls (7months) and all are fine. Stay safe

Just to add I took it from a positive pregnancy test, I rang up and the doctor left the prescription at the desk that day xx
