I'm 19 years old and 22 weeks pregnant with twins.
I had a scan 2 weeks ago and was told my cervix was funneling. I went back to the hospital for another scan 3 days ago and the funneling has doubled in size (it is currently 1.4cm wide and my cervix is 3.5cm long).
I have been prescribed pessaries and have to insert 1 every night before i go to bed.
I've been askin everyone for advice and information but most people have never even heard of cervical funneling... Can anyone help please? I would be very gratefull.

Haven't heard of it eiher.....will link this into the multiples regular thread and ask the girls there. Have you tried posting this under Health as well?

Good luck, keep in touch.

Have done a quick seach on the net, cervical funneling is often desribed as, shortening of the cervix, cant find much helpful info on it though.

some info here

I know that it is the same as shortenning of the cervix - or thickening - which is what happens as you begin to go ito labour. I don't know what it means if you are doing it at this stage - it could be something that happens with twins - I don't really know. They don't seem overly concerned thoguh. That is always a good sign.

Pessaries? That seems like an unusual treatment?

I had an incompetent cervix and ended up with a stitch being inserted in both pgs (both singletons as it happens). The stitch was inserted at about 13 weeks, shortly after nuchal scan. With ds1 I was on bed rest for the entirety of the 2nd trimester.

When are you next being scanned. Tbh I would ask for regular scans to monitor this.

I don't think it's a twin thing.

I hope you get the answers you need honey.

ladymuck - snap!

The hospital have told me to go back on thursday for another cervical scan and to see if the pessaries are working. If not, they said i will have to have a stitch.
Is there any danger in having a stitch?
I really have no idea about any this, it's all new to me and i'm really scared.

a stitch is where they tie the cervix together. They can do it under general or local and if your cervix is strting to open early this can stop it. It does carry a risk of miscarriage / inducing labour - you take a calculated risk.

They are the reason that I have two children.

btw don't be scared of having the stich - I know thing about it is sounds horrid but it really isn't - they are no cuts and you are not aware when it goes on. My policy was to never think about it too much - then it was fine.
