POSSIBLY pregnant with Twins - should I take extra folic acid?

Sorry for the very random post. I feel like a bit of an interloper!

Basically I'm very early pregnant 6/7 weeks. I had some bleeding over the weekend and went to the EPU today where they scanned me and found TWO heartbeats. I am still bleeding and one of the sacs was a lot smaller than the other but for today, I am pregnant with twins (OMG!).

I'm being rescanned in a week, no one knows what will happen but I forgot to ask about folic acid at the hospital - should I be taking extra do you think???

No, take the normal amount. usual idiot disclaimer, ask a professional if not sure. Wink

Oh, and fingers crossed that the little one starts to grown properly.

I'd phone your local midwife at your GP surgery and ask. Mine gave me a prescription for the extra folic acid tablets which was left at reception for me to collect.

Other than that, put your feet up and look after yourself Smile

Ok, I don't actually have a midwife yet - there isn't one based at my GP surgery and I haven't been referred yet but I will see about calling my GP. I don't feel I can actually say it out loud right now, will try tomorrow!!!

I wasn't told to take extra folic acid with twins. I hope all looks good on the next scan.

I was prescribed extra Folic Acid after discovering it was twins at my 13 weeks scan.

My midwife didn't know. I took extra as more is recommended in other situations (overweight etc). I think the recommended amount is greater in some other countries as well so asked it wouldn't do any harm. At my first consultant appointment he said it was a good idea to take extra.
However bear in mind that most people don't even know they're having twins until 12 weeks when they have their first scan- and it is those 12 weeks where folic acid is most vital! So if you don't, everything should be fine
