15 weeks pg with id twins measuring very different sizes - help!

Has anyone experienced this? One of them is on the 3rd centile, the other near the 50th. Our consultant doesn't think it's TTTS or a chromosomal problem, but due to unequal sharing of the placenta.

I can't believe that things are going to turn out ok with one so very much smaller than the other, but the consultant says he thinks they have a good chance. I am finding this very hard to believe.

Has anyone had a similar growth discrepancy? Please tell me even if it there wasn't a great outcome, I feel like I really need to have a realistic view of what's likely to happen.

I have dcda twins so no risk of TTTS but at 14w I had a similar discrepancy. They got me back for a growth scan at 16w and either the 'little' twin had caught up, or the first set of measurements were inaccurate - I suspect the latter.

Try not to worry too much, stay away from google, and see what they say at the next scan.

I did have TTTS and laser surgery and my almost two year olds are fast asleep upstairs! If I recall correctly up to a 15% difference is not indicative of TTTS. Are you under a FMC?

Hi, thanks, yes we have an FMC. We've had three scans already and the little one isn't catching up, but for some reason he doesn't think that in itself is necessarily a problem. I don't understand how it can not be a problem when they're supposed to be identical, so surely if all was well they'd be growing at the same rate? Next scan is in nearly 2 weeks. The waiting in between is hard!

My friend had twins the same time as me and there was a 3 lb weight difference at birth. She ended up having a hole in the heart so gained really slow etc when born but is fine now as almost caught up with her sister at 2.

If you're under FMC you're in the right place! I think it would be unusual for them to be exactly the same but its the degree of difference that is the issue.

After I had surgery my consultant said its nigh on impossible to split the placenta 50/50 and my litle twin actually overtook the bigger twin because of the difference. As long as the fluid around each baby is sufficient its not a problem. Perhaps you just have this variation happening naturally?

Not to scare you but just make you aware the signs of TTTS include breathlesness, a rapid change in bump size and / or a very hard bump. If you notice any of those I would ask them for a scan sooner but otherwise try and wait it out. I know how hard that is! Good luck x

Hi, like silverangel, i too went through ttts.
Size difference kind of sat at around 20% most the time,they said 25% difdifference would concern them. The main sign of thr ttts in the end was the difference i. The amount of aamniotic fluid around each baby.
I think its fairly normal for there to be some level of difference in size, with any type of twins but particularly Mono twins.
My boys (born at 32 weeks) were 3lbs 11oz and 4lbs 3oz. They are now 8 weeks old ad doing very well but there is still a size difference, one is approx 6lbs 4oz and the bigger boy is roughly 8lbs.
Make sure (if not already) they are closely monitoring you, i would push for weekly scans if possible.

The hosp was worried about the size difference although I am sure they kept getting the twins mixed up -

DT2 looked tiny when they were born and caught up weight wise with his brother on his 2nd birthday - at 4yrs the little one is a good 2" taller than his 'big' brother :)
