Cake ideas b/g twins? 1st bday

hiya. It's DTs first birthday next week (where did the year go?! Will I ever sleep again?! Where is my sanity?!)
Anyway, I would like to make a cake and wondered what ideas you had for b/g twins? I am an ok baker - only been adventurous once before for DD 3rd bday when I did a princess ballerina cake.

Could you make them a small cake each?

I would do a small cake each, and take lots of photos before they rub it in to their hair.

OK, I've looked at the photos to find out what we did.
1st birthday: shared cake, white icing with balloons and gifts in primary colours.
2nd birthday: shared cake with their names written on it, white icing with balloons again.
3rd birthday: two separate small cakes, both white icing.

My mum made us a madeira cake, iced with two little marzipan babies on, one pink and one blue.

From looking at pictures, we did a shared cake up until about 4 (when they started school they were 'too cool, Mummy, for a shared cake').

So are you a good cake decorator (if you did a princess ballerina cake- I just made square or round sponges with white icing and sprinkly things on top...) The problem with 1st birthday twin cakes are for a lot of people, it's very easy to shape a 1 shaped birthday cake. But it looks odd having a 1 because there are two of them, even though they're both one, in a weird way... Also, if you do a shared cake and you want to make it clear there's b/g twins, then there's a tendency to go for blue/pink (same for clothes, for instance).

How about alphabet block cakes? I remember thinking about that. If you have a rectangular large-ish cake tin, then cut up into squares. Make sure they're thick-ish, so like a square. Ice them white, then using other colours, you can ice on the edging in one of those fancy decorations. In another, bright coloured, style of icing writing, ice on some random letters or numbers. Our b/g twins are two now. 1st birthday got one made, as we got married that week too, so no time to bake! It was round, white icing, primary colour balloons and smarties on it and their names. 2nd birthday was a couple of weeks ago. Made a big rectangular victoria sandwich cake, covered it with Dr Oetker royal icing, and used a 'Timmy Time' cake topper ordered online which was personalised with their names. First time I've used an icing cake topper and it was brilliant. If, like me, you are good at the baking and no so great with the decorating, it's perfect. Is there a theme or character they both like? Love zeruas alphabet blocks idea too!

Love those ideas! Ended up talking to a mum at preschool who makes cakes for a living so I am going to attempt a cake, half pink half blue and make two teddy bears out of modelling fondant to go on top. Never done anything like this so wish me luck!

I have boy twins. We always have separate cakes. My sisters make one each, but if it were me making I would make a stack of cup cakes and buy rice paper toppers in their favorite characters - Fifi and Ben 10 for example.

My friend did a book cake and had one side for dtd and one for dts - was fab. My dtds didn't like cake (they do now!) so I make a teddy shaped fruit flan.

I have always made a joint cake for my b/g twins but for their 5th birthday they will get separate ones.
1st: a butterfly (which ended up looking like the X factor logo)
2nd: a yellow cat
3rd: a sweet lorry
4th: a house decorated with sweets

Planning to do a football pitch cake for ds (nice and easy!) and something sparkly and for ds on their 5th

We have always had a cake each (DTs are 2.10) and for 1st bday we had 2 number 1 cakes, one chocolate sponge and the other vanilla, worked really well and looked great in the photos!

Oh yes and one was decorated with fruit and the other with chocolate buttons and they looked really nice.

Agree, always a cake each. And singing Happy Birthday to each one too.
