multiple mums - what kind of birth did you have

Just wondering how many mums of multiples had to have a caesarean due to position of babes or general hyper careful hospitals when it comes to twinnies.

All the way through my pg they kept telling me I would be going in for a planned C-section. I got quite used to the idea. However then at about 36 weeks, my consultant said "ooooh they both have their heads down, we can go for a natural!" I was a bit daunted as it was my first pregnancy. However I went ahead and had them naturally (well there was the top class epidural of course!!) and am pleased I did. But I wondered how many other mums of multiples had them in this way. I have a pal with twins and she had hers naturally even though the second twin was breech --- ouuuuuchhhhh.

Opposite for me, the hospital was determined I would 'enjoy' a natural birth. Fate had it thought that I would develop pre-eclampsia and despite their best efforts to induce the little buggers were staying put and I ended up having them surgically removed! The staff were most disappointed!

The only thing they said I couldn't do was use the birth pool to give birth but had I wanted to I could have gone in until near the end. Sections were never mentioned other than what would happen if one was needed.

The room I was in had two other emergency c-section mums, to single babies. Planned sections, unless for a good reason, were not encouraged. I did hear a few mums at the antenatal class say they were having them regardless though and I was a fool to consider having twins naturally.

I had a c-section due to one of mine being breech and she would have been (and was!) the first one out. However I got the impression if they had both been head down they would have been happy for me to have a natural birth.(I also have an older daughter who was born naturally.) Somebody I know had hers vaginally and I think she said there was 1hr 15mins between them

DT1 was a vaginal delivery, but my cervix closed within a couple of minutes for some reason, so DT2 was born by emergency C Section 12 minutes later.

Mine were always going to be delivered by C section. Consultant thought it was safer that way He said that he was not in favour of c sections generally (unless necessary of course) but recommended it in my case as it was twins and I think maybe my age (39), but cant quite remember if that was a reason, its been 4.5 years. I do remember him saying that a c section is better for the second twin as this is where delivery problems are more likely to arise. he was an experienced and recommended obst so i went along with it and had no problems

catj - yikes, 1hr 15 mins!!! Mine were 12 mins apart, the hardest hour of my life all that bloody pushing.

C-section with GA. DT1 normal presentation. DT2 breech.

My twins were both head down and I had them naturally. I think I was lucky to be able to do so and I bounced back really quickly afterwards. Had to have Ventouse for the first twin though.

I had a section with the DTs. They were transverse and the cord was presenting. So rather dangerous for them to be born vaginally. Of course DT1 shoved her placenta in the way so that they had to deal with that before grabbing DT2 who had decided to start down the birthing canal lol.

It's like that now. She gets her way and he wanders off and does his own thing lol

My consultant was very happy for me to go for a vaginal birth if all had been well. Still, the anaethestist was absolutely gorgeous! Wouldn't have missed him for the world!

Both Naturally - DS head down, dream birth.
DD breech - cord came out first so consultant tried to break her collarbone, all bleeping and drama. DD was born blue and had to be resussed but all ok in the end, but maybe explained her colic, reflux and general screaming for the first 3 months.

I was booked for a section as they were both thought to be breech, but on the day the consultant decided one was head down and said I should have natural. I had fits and begging and tears until I got my section! And they were both breech too.

I had a section at 32 weeks because baby number three had stopped growing. I went into theatre at 10.10am and it was all over by 10.33am! It was the most lovely amazing experience and I would give anything to do it all again! Life was much easier when they were babies, even toddlers!

I had a CS at 37 weeks. DT 1 was breech with a prolapsed cord, DT was transverse. No way were they coming out any other way! All was well and CS was complication free.

Hi HM, I had a heavenly birth with the DTs. My consultant kept saying "oh they'll just slip out since you've had a baby already" (not a very nice compliment methinks I'm thinking of the phrase sausage up an alley, sorry if thats TMI).

Anyway, he encouraged me to go natural all the way (no pain relief ). Luckily my midwife at the birthing moment suggested I have an epidural since there might need to be 'intervention'.

I did and it was just lovely. A warm, balmy summer Friday night, dim lights, DT1 popped out head first and DT2 was breech but with only a wee tiny tear. Still ended up in theatre due to retained placenta which kind of ruined the moment......

Funniest bit was hearing the troops assemble outside my room (two of everyone in case of problems). I could hear tea cups and biscuits as they waited for me! I felt I'd robbed them of a bit of drama when it all went so well!

A very traumatic emergeny section at 30 weeks. They are now 2 1/2 yrs. but their early months will haunt me forever. No one can ever prepare you for a very premature birth.
