17 weeks pg today and about half a stone lighter than when I conceived - can that be normal?

I did IVF and the day we found out I was expecting twins, 10 weeks ago, I was put on a strict no-sugar diet to postpone the inevitable gestational diabetes (v diabetic in first pregnancy, family history of diabetes, overweight). I think I put on weight prior to IVF thanks to Christmas and the various hormones I was taking, but now I am almost half way through this pregnancy and am about half a stone lighter than I was when I started. Also I haven't felt any 'butterflies', as I had by this stage with DD, though I have had the odd 'tumbling' feeling - not sure how else to describe it but I am reminded of the last scan when they were both doing somersaults. And my bump isn't as big as I thought it would be by now. I did a couple of stupidly long car journeys a few weeks ago and was really quite tired and uncomfortable for a few days afterwards. Can anyone reassure me things are OK? I have an appointment with my consultant next week but I really want to check on them now :(

Hi there.

I know the feeling of worrying all the time, double the worry I guess. I am 17+2 and still cant feel much movement. I went for a private scan on Sunday and they were both moving and somersaulting like crazy and I couldnt feel any of it. So I wouldnt worry too much. I also have a high BMI but apart from my stomach, I havent put on weight anywhere else. I havent weighed myself yet, too scared!

If you are worried, ring your midwife and talk to her about it. She may get you in and listen the their heartbeats.

I know it is hard, but try not to worry too much (say me who worries all the time).

I was the same. I lost weight in the first trimester with morning sickness so didn't gain any extra weight till 25 weeks. My midwife said the baby measured the correct size and that weight was no longer considered a key factor.

Thank you both. I'm generally quite good at not worrying but occasionally it creeps up on me. Your scan sounds lovely gardenpixies - I'm hoping for something similar next week. I'm in France so my care is consultant-led - I know she is frantically busy so there's little point in trying to move my appointment forward, and anyway it won't change anything. Meanwhile I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

I had twins too.

I didn't feel them move until about 22 weeks, and even then questioned whether that's what the feeling was for a few more weeks. I didn't have any other pregnancy symptoms.

I also lost weight during the first two trimesters (probably due to cutting out wine Blush) - apart from my belly, I was much slimmer at the end of pregnancy (and now) than I was pre-pregnancy.

If you're genuinely worried, ring your midwife. She might come and listen for heartbeats or send you for a scan. I think my midwives responded a bit more to my (admittedly rare) concerns because I was carrying twins.

I lost weight too, like Happy, prob mostly due to wine! The only weight I gained was babies and their fluid, as soon as I delivered I was 5lb lighter than when I conceived. Sadly the wine has now put that back on again!

Try not to worry. I lost almost a stone in my first trimester alone and didn't feel my girls until around 22weeks then the little blighters kept me awake at night Wink

Oh great, thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to the scan now!
