How early could you see your Twins on Scan?

We went for a scan last week as a little bit of bleeding.

Sonographer dated me as 5+1 Cycle dates are 7+3 but my dates are 6+3 due to when I got my positive test.

Anyway she says "dont get too excited but looks like you have twins in there. I would like to rescan you in 2 weeks time"

She has a further look and changed her mind saying she now thought it was a membrane which was attached (??).

She asked if twins would change how we Managed the pregnancy. (ie terminate) Of course not I said...

So she then said in that case I wont rescan you. Im 99% sure it was a membrane but as scan isnt very clear and you are very early we will wait and see if you have a surprise at the 12 weeks scan.

ARRGGGHHHH Its been doing my head in now. Any advice?

I found out at 5 and a half weeks. There was no doubt she told me it was twins, I was so shocked but happy, it was only weeks after a late loss. Both hearts were beating. I was given a 50% chance of miscarriage as was bleeding and there was blood in the womb. Luckily they survived and are now 8! It must be awful not knowing. I think if it were me I would book a private scan if I had the funds (have spent a fortune on scans due to anxieties!) but for about 8-10 weeks. Or ask for another scan at the EPU. Good luck and hope all is OK.

Thank you jellybeans. I have midwife appt Wed, we need to discuss my sickness as I have been very Ill. Even fluids are coming up. Have lost half a stone. I'm so confused about dates and now this added dimension. Plus there has been more bleeding but no
Pain. I doubt she will refer me again.

Sadly no funds for private scan- and even if I did there is only one venue down here and I don't think they do early ones.

Also she saw one heartbeat so why would she even think there may be another.

It was a transvag scan but image very poor.

Sounds very strange, I really don't think she should have told you unless she was sure. Mine was trasvaginal aswell and usually the picture is better but they don't like committing to anything till you are past 10 weeks or so. Just been wondering, you know those pregnancy tests that tell you how many weeks you are, would they show further along if it was twins? (with the higher hormones etc.) Not sure if it is worth a try as it is a long shot really. I know I would hate waiting as well and many times i couldn't afford a scan but was dying to know!!!! I would try again for a referral re the bleeding, worth a try even if you have to push. Hope you feel better soon, i was sick with my girls (single babies) but not at all with my twins or my other DS. However, plenty of people are. Take care, hope you get another scan soon for reassurance.

At 5.5 weeks I was told I had an empty sac - at 7 weeks I was told they were id twins. No question with clear heart beats.

Having said that, I've been told many people find out they're having twins at 5 weeks (no clear heartbeats at that stage) but at 12 weeks one disappears - vanishing twin syndrome.

I had blood tests to check my hormones and they were not unusually high (often are for twins but not always).

I spent 5 weeks waiting for 12 weeks scan panicking about vanishing twin syndrom and tried to persuade dh to buy a scan machine so I could check every night! DH didn't agree (although he was just as impatient).

Good luck x

I agree wish she hadn't said anything!

I also don't agree I was only 5wks+1 when scanned as the clearblue digital showed I was 5wks+ over a week before scan.

Also there was a heartbeat which isn't normally seen til 6wks.

Arrggghhhh

I can't imagine how frustrating it is for you - be sure to let us know what happened.

I had a little bleed at about 5 weeks, I went to the EPU and was told that I needed to go back in 2 or 3 days because they wouldn't be able to tell me anything until at least five and a half weeks. I therefore went back at 5+4 and was told there were 2 sacs (I still didn't twig that 2 sacs = twins!!) so was completely shocked. At that stage they could not tell whether both babies would develop ( they said there was no reason to think they wouldn't and the bleed was probably down to implantation bleeding) but they were 100% sure it was twins. I went back at 7+4 and they saw two beating hearts.

I have an Aunt who suffered "vanishing twin" syndrome - 2 sacs at a 6 week scan and then only one present at the 12 week scan.

Good luck

They saw mine on ultrasound at 7 + 5, it was VERY clear there were two in there!

onadietcokebreak · 02/04/2011 22:38

Hi scan is Wednesday so all should be made clearer then.

One healthy developing baby will make me very happy. Two would be scary but wonderful.
