Hi all,
This is my first post prompted by a lot of worry. I've also posted this in the pregnancy topic, but thought I may also get some good advice here. I am 10 weeks pregnant. Due to having some spotting early on I have been for several scans (NHS and private). I have been told that one twin has a heartbeat and is spot on for growth, but that the other one has no heartbeat and is much smaller. The private consultant I saw last week said that it would probably be absorbed back into my body and should not result in a miscarriage in the majority of cases.
However, the previous scan on the NHS was more negative and I was told if my body recognised that one twin had died then both would be miscarried as they share the same placenta.
I have also worried myself silly because of all the research I have read that a vanishing twin (particularly a monchorionic twin) increases the likelihood of cerebral palsy and other neurological problems.
At the moment I'm waiting for a referral to a twin specialist on NHS.
Has anyone else been in this situation with identical twins and had a healthy child? Any information or stories welcome, positive and negative as I just want the truth. Thank you.

sorry for you worry and upset. This must be such a tricky time.
I know 2 friends who have had a vanishing twin and gone on to have a healthy singleton baby. I don't know whether their twins were identical or not.

I also know 2 people who had a vanishing triplet and went on to have healthy twins. (one of them with much bleeding and a spell in hospital, then out of hospital and continued with a normal pregnancy)
Keep hopeful and look after yourself.

I have seen this with ivf pregnancies - not sure if it's more common or just more visible with ivf as they tend to have scans earlier. Have a look on fertilityfriends or the Care forums and you'll see a lot of vanishing twins ending with healthy singleton pregnancies.

Good luck with your pregnancy, and do try not to worry too much.

So sorry to hear this it must be very painful (had 4 x ivf and all the sagas that go with it myself) I know 2 people who had healthy singletons after one of the twins in their pregnancies died, both at a later stage than yours. both are beautiful babies. x

It's possible that I had a vanishing triplet (big bleed at 4 weeks - like a period, although didn't know I was pregnant then, and my placenta appeared like a lady the hospital had seen recently w vanishing twin or triplet). I now have 8 week old identical twin girls who are perfectly healthy. They obv had the same placenta.

Hi there, I was wondering if everything ended up on with your non-vanishing identical twin?
