Hi all as the title says my mixed race baby who is a 1yr old now is only slightly tanned looking compared to me who is very pale and has slightly wavy ringlet/afro on back of head he has all his farthers features wide mouth fuller lips and broad snub nose but really has no colour compared to all his cousins and older brother(step-son) but at birth was darker will add to that his male bits are a shade or to darker than the rest of him. We are having another baby whats other people experience, should i expect this baby to have same or maybe be darker like my dp. So many people family and friends have all commented on how light he is and one male friend even asking if his dad was mixed race himself.

IME (white English me and Oriental DH) first baby is like dad, second is like mum so expect a paler new baby, and congratulations

And I hope you don't think I' m being presumptious, but based what my best friend tells me - she is from St Kitz - the gene pool in the Caribbean is so mixed that it is usually a bit of a surprise anyway in terms of what ancestoral characteristics come out along the generations. So possibly his dad, and I presume you mean your dp, is mixed race from somewhere back in his ancestory.

Twiglett · 28/01/2007 09:59

somwhere between these twins

you really can never tell where genetics will take you ...

bran · 28/01/2007 10:01

I do get a little peeved when people expect a mixed-race child to be exactly half-way between the colours of the parents when clearly that isn't the case, even just looking at my family and friends the variation is huge. I think you'll just have to wait to see what your baby will look like, he/she will be gorgeous whatever.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/01/2007 10:01

Your DP is mixed-race - people from Jamaica aren't as dark-skinned as people from Africa, because they are all mixed.

And every time you have a baby, you're rolling the dice, genetically. The baby could come up darker, the baby could come up lighter.

Carmenere · 28/01/2007 10:05

M2b3 doesn't say that her dp is from the Caribbean though.

DizzyBint · 28/01/2007 10:06

does your dp know his background? my ex was jamaican with dark skin. his great grandmother was very white skinned and scottish, it went back to slavery times. you really can't predict these things. my sister and i are mixed race and look very different to each other. she has very tight curly hair and darker skin, i have more olive skin and wavy hair.

bran · 28/01/2007 10:14

Carmenere, m2b3 says her dp is Jamaican in the title.

The Caribbean doesn't just have a black/white mix, the islands that were under British rule also have quite a lot of indian genes in the mix. One of my Jamaican friends looks black while his brother looks completely indian with fine straight hair. I think a "wait and see" approach is going to work best.

Carmenere · 28/01/2007 10:16

DOH

sunnywong · 28/01/2007 11:01

on a slight tangent, my friend's great aunt, so that would be in the 1930s/40s went to the Southern US to live where she could "pass as white" . Like in Imitation of Life.

josephjaidensmum · 28/01/2007 23:22

hiya mum2boys3

i have a little boy 18month old who is also mixed race me white british his dad black african, and he was alot darker skined when he was born. his feature are full but hes only a little bit darker skined than me.. i had a few funny comment that have upset me, probally because his dad is so dark. but i no so many mixed raced children that all look so much different which of course they will, no 2 parent are the same same with mixed race couples. i am 16 weeks pregnant today and am also wondering what our next bundle of joy will look like. I have met full brothers and sister who are mixed race and all have completly different feautues. it would be so boring if we all looked the same. its funny how some people think mixed race children will all look the same which is not the case.
congratulations on your new baby

Mum2boys3 · 29/01/2007 09:02

Hi josephesjaidens mummy im 16 weeks pregnant too maybe we could get up to date with each other which date are you due me the 13th july. I have been told that by the time he five he should be darker as his toes and fingers are browner. I do wish he would resemble his dads colouring more then at least i wouldn't have to keep getting badgered by people comments and im also glad i didint have to go through his dad thinking it wasnt his kid, like i have read of other people with light skinned mixed race kids.

It can vary, as the genetics of skin colour are quite complicated.

I have a friend who is half Jamaican (father V dark) and half scotish. She has creamy coloured skin and wavy hair.....she looks rather like a southern Italian IYSWIM. Her husband is white. Her children are darker than she is.

speedymama · 29/01/2007 10:23

My DB has 5 mixed race children (he is Jamaican black and wife British white). The oldest is blond, white skinned with broad nose and full lips. The next 4 getting darker down the line. The last one has full afro hair, dark skin, broad nose and full lips.

My other DB has one child and his wife is Nigerian/White British with very pale complexion. Their daughter is darker than him.

My DH is white, we have twin boys. DT1 is brown skinned with wavy brown hair, stubby nose and full lips. DT2 is pale skin (he looks white actually), frizzy afro dark blond hair, stubby nose and full lips.

That's genetics for you!

speedymama · 29/01/2007 10:24

Oh, DT1 has brown eyes and DT2 blue eyes (they are nearly 3yo)

josephjaidensmum · 29/01/2007 17:17

its horrible that some peoples partner has questioned them, my other half just said i stole all the genes, he looks a lot like me. its great to have someone else to talk to about this n share experences with, 26weeks left is tooo long to wait

Mum2boys3 · 29/01/2007 17:27

i suppose its the same from any gene pool

3 of my 5 are dark haired olive skinned and dark brown eyes
2 are ble /eyed blondes

they do not look like siblings !

josephjaidensmum · 29/01/2007 18:14

my 20wk scan is 13 march i willbe 22weeks exactly... wonder why its a bit late.. saying that i found it really hard to get appointment with the midwife, dont have my notes yet, seen the doctor couple of times, my first app with the midwife is febuary, i cant remember if u can hear the heartbeat by then, or if i will have to have blood test as i think there at 16w3eeks but it will be my book in appointment. is it a bit late?

josephjaidensmum · 29/01/2007 18:15

sos febuary 1st my appoint with the midwife is,,

Kelly1978 · 29/01/2007 18:20

I wouldn't worry too much about late booking in unless you have concerns - means less appointments to go to!

I have mixed race dts, my dp is indian. One is very fair, and the other looks indian and not mixed race at all. I was guilty of expecting somewhere in the middle, but you never do know what you get! You can see mine on my profile.

Mum2boys3 · 29/01/2007 20:09

That does seem a bit late i think it depends i know you need to have the blood test for downs and spina bifida at 15 weeks i just had mine done not got results back yet. In my area your first midwife appointment is at 12 weeks then evey 4 weeks untill 30+ weeks. You didn't get offered a 12 week scan then or did you contact your doctor after then. Are you a member of the babycentre july birth board? if u are my screen name is steph_patrick. Im sure its nothing to worry about u must be low risk.
