Mixed race hair care

Hello everyone, I'm a new mum to my gorgeous baby daughter. I'm white British and her dad is from Senegal, West Africa.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice about caring for her hair. She currently has lots of lovely curly baby hair. It's very fine so I haven't even brushed or combed it yet. I wash it every three days or so with plain water or just a tiny bit of baby moisturising shampoo/conditioner (Boots own brand), then towel dry it.

It seems to be growing quite fast, but not yet changing in texture or being replaced by stronger hair.

Can anyone tell me if I'm doing this wrong / right? Any tips for going forward? Any brands you'd recommend and where to buy them?

I'd like her to have as natural hair as possible, and want to make sure it's in good condition so she doesn't have a go at me when she's a teenager!

There's a large thread on here about mixed race hair so I'll bump for you. It sounds like you're doing fine. You won't need to do much more than you're currently doing during the first year really. Her hair is likely to change texture around the age of 1. The important thing is to not wash her hair too often as afro and mixed hair tends to be dryer than Caucasian hair. Also, you might have to try a few products to find the best ones for her hair since afro hair textures can vary greatly.

I would go on YouTube and look for mixed kids hair tutorials, there is lots of good advice on there. I would also recommend shea moisture kids hair products, they are great. It is never to early to start looking after it as your baby will get used to having it done which will save tantrums in the future, oh and never use a fine tooth comb, always use wide tooth

Hi Op, use coconut oil if her hair gets dry

Hey there. Coconut oil all the way! Extra Virgin coconut oil. Apply it to wet hair with ur hands, massaging the scalp gently. It works wonders and it will moisturise it, keep it from becoming freely, protecting the hair shaft throughout heat and cold times as it develops. Hope this helps

I'm Senegalese and useless with my DD's hair so was going to post asking for help ha! My DD is 4 now though and the hair is beautiful but so easily tangled and it's a fight for me to get through without her protesting. When she was a little one though her hair was poker straight so we just used water every so often and no product. As it got curlier and longer, lots of moisture rich conditioner when we washed it. Leave in conditioners too. Have you a local afro hair shop?
