Afro mixed race hair - tell me something that works!

Tried mixed chicks, just for me, atone, vaseline, olive oil. nothing seems to work...DD hair(black mother/white father) still looks dry and brittle, when its wet, more easy to manage and therefore constantly in plaits but she wants it down like her friends (they are mixed race too but have easier to manage hair)

Any other suggestions? She's 4 btw

I use pretty and silky followed by lots of beautiful beginnings kids HAIR AND SCALP SOOTHER works really well but you must use both together but to be honest she just mayn't be able to have her hair down even though she is mixed she has Afro hair.

My lo has Afro hair and mostly has her hair up you might want to give her some confidence about having her hair in plaits.

Black girls do not tend to wear their hair down at a young age and you will find mixed children with white mothers do tend to allow their children to wear their hair down.

Not sure were you live but I would give her confidence about looking pretty with plaits and twists .

Thanks maypole, no issue with me giving her confidence about her hair and who she is, just be nice if she could wear her hair lose for a change as always have in plaits, twists or bunches. Worried too that I am breaking her hair as it is brittle, your suggestions will give a whirl. Can you get in most black hairdressers, I live in Manchester. Thanks for your advice

I wash Dd1's hair once a week and then each evening damp her hair down and put a penny sized bit of conditioner through the ends. In the mornings I spray it with a conditioning spray and brush it through with a Tangle Teaser. It doesn't seem to matter too much which brands I use. I have spent a fortune trying loads out, but tbh most seem to work equally as well.

I love her hair, but it's a bugger to manage. DD2's seems thicker and easier. Touch wood we won't have the same problems.

I'm black & my (mixed race) daughters have very different hair types, so styling their hair when left out is tailored to them. I'd say you need to start by working out your dd's hair type. This link or this one should help. Even with my DDs' different curl types, I find Kinky Curly products the best. I use both Knot Today & Curling Custard on their hair when their hair is left out. You can buy it from Amazon or that British Curlies website, among others. But, don't be put off by the price; the products do really go a long way and, if like me, you don't leave her hair out that much anyway, you'll probably only get through 1 bottle/jar per year. DD1 has much thicker hair than dd2 so my method of applying the products to her hair is different for each one. Just check out YouTube & you'll find lots of advice.

Not that it applies to you but I think this blog site is great for people unfamiliar with handling 4a/b hair. The mum there is fab, especially since I don't think she knew anything about afro hair before adopting. I love her dd's hairstyles.

Foxy, definitely don't wash it more than once a week. And to avoid drying, don't use shampoo - just conditioner to wash it. I did that on my hair for years and it was great for my natural fro!

In a spot of role-reversal, can any of you white ladies give tips on looking after my DD's hair- if you were going by hair alone you'd never know she has a black mother! Genes are weird, aren't they? I have never handled such fine hair before and am at a loss!

If you want her to wear her hair loose have you tried letting her hair dry in twists or braid and then unravelling it? Look up twist out or braid out on youtube.

This blog is awesome in my opinion with loads of styling ideas.

I have mixed hair which is really dry and frizzy and the only products that I have found that work are products by a trichologist called Teresa Angelina Richardson who has a clinic in Fulham called the Fulham Scalp & Hair Clinic.
She makes all the products herself and she is an afro hair specialist.

I use her Leave-in Protector on my hair after washing it and then i twist my hair around my fingers and it stays as a curly as it dries naturally.

I also have to use the Deep Conditioning Mask which is a really good conditioner that i put on my hair and then put a plastic bag over my hair so that it steams for 20mins.

There are other products but these two really do the trick and my hair is in a much better condition as a result.

if you want to grow your afro hair then I know that all her clients are extremely happy with the work she does because they say that their hair has never been healthier or longer.
