Hi,

I am a lone parent, am technically still a full time student although as of next week I will have finished my PGCE(successfully).

What will my status be?

Currently I am receiving some help in the form of child tax credits and child benefit. I don't have to pay council tax as a student. I am currently job-hunting and don't expect to be working as a teacher until after the summer holidays unless I can arrange some supply work this month and next, and most of that money will be spent on a childminder.

Will I be able/expected to sign onto job seekers allowance with the Job Centre over the summer and take any job? I wonder how this will work, because childcare is going to be a major issue as I need to sort out a nursery place for my son.

Many ex-pgcers sign on to JSA on completion of their course, whilst waiting to commence emploment in Sept. I am sure you have had an intensive year, and deserve a break. Although you will have to show proof you are actively seeking work, it will give you time to sort son out etc.

Your status will be UNEMPLOYED, by the way. However as a lone parent you might be able to claim Income Support for a while. Best to seek advice from your local Job Centre Plus.

Thanks. I am now making a claim since I am unlikely to start a job before September although I am trying to become employed ASAP!
