Internet Credit Card Fraud

jampots · 02/08/2005 12:47

Just before we went on hols someone successfully managed to purchase something from lastminute.com using dh's credit card (£850). Dh queried it and he is not now liable. Whilst we were away though someone has managed successfully once again to use his cc for internet porn (£8) and tried unsuccessfully to put 2 purchases through at Ryanair for £1712 and £2114 respectively. Cards have now been destroyed and stopped but RBS did say that the most likely place (less secure) they infiltrated his account was iTunes!

I am curious why itunes? Who does their payment processing?

And how alarming...

The card I use (MBNA) has a "shop safe" component. When buying online, you go to your credit card site, put in the amount and time limit you want and get a new number generated just for that. I feel much more secure using it.

Could have been cloned IRL and used online - DH's Egg card was cloned at a Slough petrol station and used online and in shops around Slough, lucky I noticed it quickly. Have to say you should have cancelled the card immediately though (maybe you did and it took a while for the other transactions to come through)

dh found out about the original transaction simply because when he phones to make a payment he asks what the running balance is and it stood out immediately as being over the top. They even advised that it wasnt necesary to contact hte Police. He used it 3 times in Ireland and twice it was referred "B" whatever that means. Once he had to give his security details and the other time he didnt which I thought was odd.
