Do i have a leg to stand on regarding my car repairs

My head gasket went before xmas, for the dealer to repair it would have cost between £1000 and £2000

My xfil said his mate could do it for £650, his mate is a self employeed mechanic, works from his own hom so has no overheads, hence why he could do it cheaper

He fixed it, in Jan i started having problems again, all the signs as before that the head had gone, he looked at it again, said it was the radiator, charged me £250 for a new one, got it back, the 'new' radiator does not look new, looks dirty and dented

was ok for a day or two then same problems came back, so he replced the thermostat, again it was ok for a day then same problems back

He has now admitted it 'might' be the head gasket, which i am 100% sure it is, and was in the first place

has told me he wont repair it with charging me full price again

Now if i had taken it to the dealer (which i wish i had) it would still be under guarantee

Do i have a case to take him to trading standards to get him to fix the problem he should have fixed in the first place

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, Thanks for reading

If he's registered as a business, it's certainly worth talking to Trading Standards about it, but if he's just some cowboy I'm not sure there's much you can do.
