I had always kind of thought it was better for us now, but not sure why. The cost of a mortgage just seemed prohibative.

If you are already in the property market & need to sell, though, it may be better to buy again -- we couldn't afford to rent (just don't earn enough) the house that we bought (even if the money sat in the bank earning interest, that interest + our income wouldn't pay the rent).

presumably because whoever recommended it thinks the property market is about to crash. As they've been saying for about 10 years now...

Um, for us it's better b/c we can't afford a house.
