Anyone else having trouble getting fake £1 coins in change?

I ended up with one last week but managed to use it in a parking meter
Tonight I saw a friend who said she keeps getting them given to her in change in shops

Got home & I didn't have the right change for the sitter so she had to give me £2 back and they are fake too

Anyone else having this problem?

How do you spot a fake pound coin?

Yes I have had a few lately.

I put them in my pocket though as the vending machine wouldn't take them. Genuinely forgot and used them to pay for a mothers day card

Feeling guilty now though.

phew - just checked the 5 x £1 coins in my wallet are all genuine.

NoBiggy · 15/03/2009 22:29

I spotted one as it was being given to me in change.

I suspect I've passed a few on without noticing.

If the coins are good fakes I never notice them and I assume the person who passed them to me did not notice either. I guess I just pass them on innocently as well.

Its the Bank of England that needs to deal with this not members of the public.

Debasement of coingage (for that is the technical term) is as old as money.

I guess there are some bad fakes about at the moment

only ever had 1 that I noticed. Though noticed this morning that I had a 10Euro coin in my purse - which presumably I had been giving instead of a £2 coin.
