Blardy blardy mobile phone contracts and part-codes and all that crap - can they DO this???

I got my contract phone stolen before Christmas and because the 3 network is CRAP anyway, I decided to cut my losses and change networks. My contract was up anyway so I wasn't tied to them. Initially, when I rang up to report it stolen they asked me if I wanted a Part-code (if that's how you spell it) so I could take my number with me...

so I said yes, they gave me a part-code and then put me through to an automated line which I thought told me that the code was valid for 30 days only.

I then changed my mind about the part-code and got another phone and new number. What I didn't know was that if you don't use the part-code within the 30 days, they carry on charging you, so I have paid for Jan and Feb and now when I rang up today they said it was my fault for not using the part-code, they'd take my ONE MONTH's notice from today so I'll have to pay for March now as well !!! £45 for NOTHING! Can they do this? Have I got any right to complain?
