What's the best, SAFE interest I can get in the UK on a house sale lump sum do you think?

We need it to cover our UK rent (825 a month).

An overseas account (where the house was sold) offers 4.75% at a major bank BUT not sure they have the protection we have here, and the amount is a few multiples of 50,000 pounds. We need to check that tax situation about being non-dom abroad now so it may be wiser to bring the money to the UK on a lower interest rate.

Have you checked out money saving expert? It's Martin Lewis' website and he not only gives the latest interest figures, he'll highlight any "issues" with the account - like not being able to make withdrawals (without losing interest) and how your money is insured (i.e. the British system or a foreign government).

Aren't ING doing a decent rate?

mejon · 25/01/2009 15:31

ING are currently paying around 4% for new customers but this includes a fixed bonus for 1 year. We've just opened an account there to transfer money we had in Cahoot over as the Cahoot account is now paying a pitiful amount of interest. Very few accounts are paying decent interest that is paid monthly so we were quite restricted.

I use a local building society, at the moment, they're offering a fixed rate bond at 4.6%. They tend to offer good rates on savings.
