New condenser boiler not saving us money as promised

Anyone else found that their new condenser boiler is not as efficient as you were promised when it was installed? We are finding that we are using almost twice as much gas as we did before.

Bumping for you.

are you certain you haven't been using more ? It has been a cold period recently - if you have it set to a thermostat then it will use more gas to get there with colder outside temperatures.

Are you comparing gas volumes used or total price you are charged ?

We now have 18 months of usage to compare, and can see a definite jump when comparing usage in the last two winters to usage in the previous seven years. I am comparing usage, not prices. Really annoying!

I went on the British Gas website where you can calculate your savings on a new condensing boiler> I would only save £105 a year as it is a small household ( 2 bed falt) So even BG the great salesmen have admiited you do not save that much.

But the last 2 winters have been freakishly cold for quite longish periods?

Celibin · 01/04/2011 20:30

By the way on a website blog written by a plumber I read : "the old gas boilers with the flame still visible are 60-65 % efficient so they should be replaced : the newer ones are 70 to 75% efficient and it is controversial whether they need replacing with the new condensing boilers " The gas trade are therefore not clear about the new boilers

The success of a boiler depends on 1.the installation 2. getting the right boiler for your property 3. how you take care of it which is probably the same as 2. A few BoschWorcester installers are giving a free 5 year parts and labour guarantee but only a few . Check it out and all you would need to do for the 5 years is have an annual service (this is a condition) But the buzz is;these new boilers will last 10 years at most as nothing is made to last these days. As for bg 25 year guarantee : check out the service contract the price of it goes up as the boiler ages so it will be pretty expensive .

I find it incredible that any boiler would use twice the gas of any other if it's a similar size and servicing the same size house, number of radiators etc. I'd suggest going back to the installer and asking them to check that the thing is working properly. It might have some defect.

This thread is from 2009. Maybe JaninLondon has fixed her boiler problems now?
