Quick question about tax on american purchases...

I am buying an item on a US website, for delivery in US. Free delivery, it says subtotal then price. Is this including tax? What is tax amount ?

Some site I have been to add this on to see. This site does not, and I want to know how much I am purchasing before I give my CC details, whether this price is total price or before tax price...is there a general rule?

You shouldn't have to pay sales tax if you're abroad, I believe, though there will be customs duty and and import duty this end when it is imported, providing it costs more than £18 (I am assuming you are in UK Pav).
There will almost certainly be a 'fee' for the import company's admin too, for paying your duty 'for you' [grrr]

Oh, doh- just seen for delivery in US sorry. (A present?)
Some states don't have sales tax, so it may depend on where the company HQ is based, and what federal regime they are following.

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2008 23:09

I am buying it on a site to be delivered as a gift, so nought to do with me once I buy it.

So, if it says say $60 then thats the cost?

I would assume so- have you been through to payment screen? There should definitely be no additional costs to the one you click 'yes, final payment amount' to IYSWIM.
Just seen you are spending christmas in NY! Have a fabulous time!

EachPeachPearMum · 14/12/2008 23:17

BTW- 45/50 states have sales tax... see here

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2008 23:21

Yes, there is sales tax on top, got to final screen another $4.00. I am sure I can handle it, although it has creeped up as I got carried away!

Yes, I am indeed in NY! lovely!

Ah how long does it take....next question Each - how can I pay if the billing address is in UK, but it won't let me selet a country. Tried using US address but it just says billing address does not match

Oh dear. Sorry- I don't know a way round that.
Is it for BIL? Could your sister pay on her card, and you refund her when you're there?

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2008 23:35

It is for a different lot of people in US!!! family in California! I will get BIL to pay for it and put money into his paypal a/c.

Just typical as I have spent the last 3 hours searching for a present for my niece, wanted it done and dusted. Then only 3 more presents to go. But alas, will not be so! I would prefered for him not to know how much we are spending on presents (too much!) but heyho!

thwarted at every turn? Gah- those pesky americans... expecting you to be able to validate you have funds on your card?

Hope you get it sorted.- and purchase from Delaware- no sales tax

PavlovtheRedNosedReindeer · 15/12/2008 22:07

I got my BIL to pay in the end, much more straightforward, could not figure out how to pay with UK card and no US address (I tried lying and using a relative's address but it got me!)
