I'd just like to add - I did this a few years back, not a debt counsillor but general advisor, and it's very worthwhile. The training is very interesting, and I found it was a good stepping stone to going back to work/training after being "just a housewife" for so long and having no confidence. And you can make a real difference to people in terrible straits, while only giving up a few hours a week of your time.
