Does any one know of a way of checking out the background of a company?

You know what i mean, like checking if they have complaints against them, or how reliable they are.
Building companies etc???

Contact local council, a lot of local councils have a list of companies with a good reputation as part of a government initiative to try and clamp down on cowboys and rogue traders.
