Can a business receive donations?

We have had an appeal from a small, local business looking to clear debts and basically secure their future.

They are not a registered charity, but a business.

I would like to help but I am sure they will have to treat it as income or something and i won't go as far as they think

They would have to treat it as income.

And the thing is, if they're in debt, what's to stop them clearing their debts and ending up back in debt again?
