FBO Client trust bank transaction

Does anyone who knows anything about banking/trusts etc know what this transaction might mean? We’ve had a payment in our Monzo joint account, but it doesn’t give any information to suggest who it is from or what it’s for. It just says overpayment, and when I google FBO it suggests something about trusts

I asked Monzo and they just said they don’t know anything either and can’t tell me anything. We aren’t expecting a refund of anything so I’m stumped and wondering if it wasn’t actually meant for us in which case obviously I don’t want to use it. If it helps, my FIL died last year and DH was the beneficiary so he has paid a lot of things for his estate so I guess there’s a chance it could be something from that but would they not get in touch first to let you know?

Have you had any dealings with solicitors recently? House purchase? Who could have your Monzo account details?

We used solicitors 18 months ago for a house sale, and then 7 months ago for a house purchase but both of those were fixed fee and we paid the exact amounts due

Monzo must have some way of tracing it. Whatever you do, don't spend it!

Thats what I thought too, but they just said they get the same information about a transaction as we do so they don’t know who it’s come from or why. The person said see if I can find an email address or reference for them, but the only info I’ve got is what’s on the screenshot🤦🏻‍♀️

Must be to do with FIL I would think

fbo means for the benefit of and it looks like he made an overpayment somewhere maybe on an estate bill? Can he remember if he gave out your bank details anywhere? I would wait in case it isn’t yours - you’ll soon know as they will take it back

you might have given the lawyers on the house sale X to pay all sorts of considerations and it was slightly over? Have a look at that reference number and see if it was the one 7 months ago (as it implies it was money held on trust ie for the sale/anything to do with it)

Has he searched his emails with the number showing? That is likely a client or account number.
