The bank system/process when there is an atm dispute

DH tried to withdraw money yesterday and there was a problem with the machine - so he moved to the next machine

Both transactions are showing today - the automatic system says wait 24 hrs

So do I wait? Ring them?

Will the machine 'know" its made a mistake? Just on a count of the cash? How will it know my DH was the one that didnt get paid?

Really interested in how the process works

yes the ATM will be reset and the withdrawal will show as minus XXX and then as plus XXX. The ATM will know after which transaction it didn't balance so knows which account to correct.

Ok and it happens automatically without me registering a problem?

DH is going to be gutted when I tell him, he hates it when things aren't 'right'

This happened to me recently. The money was not refunded. I waited 2 weeks then rang the number on the ATM and a recorded message said to contact my bank. I rang my bank and they refunded me immediately.
A good result but I was shocked that the ATM company did nothing to resolve their error until my bank took action.

id message the bank in there live chat then you have something to reference back to if you do have to dispute it

This happened to me a year or so ago. I called my bank straight away. The money was returned to my account but they said it may take up to 40 days, which it did. I tried to withdraw £50 so it didn’t matter much but if it had been a significant amount 40 days would have been a very long wait! I bank with Barclays if that’s any help.

Give it a couple of days to align itself and if it's not refunded you need to raise a claim with your bank. They will get the ATM records from the ATM provider which will show if it balances or not, if any notes were retained in the purge bin etc. Are you sure it wasn't dispensed after he walked away? Was anyone behind him?

It's your bank that's responsible for the facility of withdrawing the money from an ATM, even if it's not one of their ATMs.

Is my bank responsible for checking whether the money was actually taken or swallowed back into the machine?

this happened to me in South America 15 years ago, they refunded the money while they investigated but then took it back again, they refused to believe I hadn’t had the money so somehow the machine was showing that I’d had it.

Yep, they will get the ATM records from whoever owns it.

lordbaddingham · 29/05/2026 12:21

They might just refund it without checking the records though if it's the first time it's happened.

They refunded immediately but said they might have to recall the money.

They have told me 15-17 working days

<sigh>
