Just realised we haven't been paying gas for 14 months...

We are on dual fuel, got letters to say the handover etc had gone ahead. Then we have a standing order coming out for gas/elec each month. But on further inspection of my bills (I'm bad, never check them!) we're only getting billed for the elec.

Where will we stand when the gas bill does come in? They'll need to backdate the rates I assume? Is there a maximum time period they can ask for back? What about service charges etc when we haven't been getting billed/admin? Will we get any interest free payment terms?

I'm a bit terrified lol.

I would get in touch with them asap and explain. They will catch up with you anyway. It will be back dated but they should agree with you a payment plan.

Twiglett · 20/06/2008 15:21

shit

call them and explain and get a payment plan

chocolatespiders · 20/06/2008 15:23

are you sure it is not just coming out as one payment

missorinoco · 20/06/2008 15:24

we had the same problem with electricity. i contacted them and asked, and was told seeing as they hadn't billed me for a year, i would have at least that amount of time to pay them back.

if you chase it up, keep chasing it. i am still waiting for a bill another year later.

oh, and any old meter readings you have, eg immed before handover, will come in handy.

Phone and explain, and pay off abit each month ontop of your usual payments. Our phone bill wasn't paid for about 18 months, had DD set up their end but wasn't at the bank for some reason but we just didn't notice. Still about £600 left to go on it

Many moons ago now, dh & I moved into a rented house for 6m & BritGas forgot to bill us despite informing them. We paid the bill in monthly installments but then BG handed the account over to a debt agency which didn't look too good on our credit history, despite the fact it was their poor record keeping at fault and we were happily repaying them.

suzi2 · 20/06/2008 15:35

I'm going to have to go through all the paperwork this weekend and double check that the payment doesn't cover both. But I haven't had a gas bill in hence why I'm suspicious now.

We had a similar problem in our last house with electricity and apparently couldn't be billed because our house didn't exist so couldn't be using any power.

We could afford the bill outright, but I object to that when they've screwed up lol.

When my paper bill used to come through for dual fuel it didn't specify what amount was for gas or elec - it is a set at £35 pcm for both together... are you SURE your bills aren't the same?

vacaloca · 20/06/2008 15:51

We had the same problem and we had to insist a bit but they finally agreed to let us pay what we owed over the same amount of months (i.e. 9 months) that they hadn't billed us for. It was a bit of shock to find all that money though and a huge relief when the 9 months were over and our bill dropped massively.

suzi2 · 20/06/2008 15:56

It definitely says "electricity bill" on it, so I naturally assumed it wasn't gas. Though it's hard to tell price wise because the way prices have changed and our consumption has too. I think I'd better dig it all out and do a full analysis!

We didn't have a direct debit set up for 5 months, despite many, many nagging phone calls. We paid off the arrears over a year with increased monthly payments. Well, we didn't (due to further ridiculous direct debit shennanigans), but that was the plan.
