Maternity money stress

moneystressmum · 02/04/2026 19:42

I’m on my last month ish of maternity and on unpaid, my home is undergoing major renovations and is taking every penny from my husband’s wage and obliterated all savings. I have £1200 of outgoing bills and no means to pay, my credit score is terrible so only loan option is a sort of pay day loan. The house renovations/issues were unexpected including needing alternative accommodations so meant planning for unpaid period has gone to pot.
can anyone advise what to do, or if they would just go for the payday loan. Thanks

Can you go back to work early?

rubyslippers · 02/04/2026 19:44

Any chance of a mortgage holiday ?
loan from family
overdraft

a pay day loan will have crippling interest

Return to work and utilise BH/AL? It means you get paid at the end of the month

I would genuinely do absolutely anything possible to avoid taking out a pay day loan. If your credit rating is as bad as you say it is then the kind of loan you’ll be offered will be horrific.

What actually are the £1200 of outgoing bills? Anything you can call & renegotiate under financial hardship? E.g. car finance or mortgage companies often can give you some flex if needed. Set up affordable payment plans?

Any family who could help out in the short term? Anything could sell?

I cannot express enough how bad an idea a pay day loan is, genuinely.

Please please please don’t get a payday loan.

Overthebow · 02/04/2026 20:51

TalulahJP · 02/04/2026 22:32

can your dh get a loan?

or can you sell something?

Groundhogday2025 · 02/04/2026 22:35

What exactly has gone wrong with the house and is it covered by home insurance?
Otherwise KIT days and accrued AL and maybe returning earlier than planned.

SuzyFandango · 02/04/2026 22:59

Do kit days and get paid for them

Sell anything you can.
