Please can anyone advise the average cost of setting up a will? I have been quoted £500 plus VAT (or double if my husband and I do it together) and just wanted to check this is standard as I’m on mat leave and budgeting at the moment but am keen to get it done. Many thanks

Actually legally if a charity is offering a free will writing service, they legally cannot mandate that you leave anything to them at all. Of course, it would be nice if you did given they pay a lot to be able to provide the service free of charge, but if you wanted you could make a free will with the Dogs Trust without leaving them a penny.

Sure, I just think “what’s in it for them?”. I’ve worked for a few charities (in fundraising but not with gifts) and I know a lot of the money they take is wasted and they can be aggressive. I would love to be open about these charities but obviously can’t on here. So why would they write a will for someone for nothing or just a nominal sum of money?

I've also heard horror stories about charities hounding grieving families for their 'share' of the estate. For that reason DH and I have decided not to include any charities in our wills.
We had our wills done by Which online wills it was very straightforward and they have several levels. We went for the premium service which covered our two mirror wills, having them checked (they came back to us with a couple of questions), printing and binding and registering them on the national wills register. The whole process was very quick and easy with lots of guidance letting us know the implications of our choices. It took about ten days from starting the process to receiving our wills ready to sign. The cost was about £210. This was recent.
