NI contributions for seasonal workers

How does the NI contribution record work if you are a seasonal worker?
For example, a student working six weeks in summer and then Christmas period - they’d pay NI for 10 or so weeks.
Surely that is not enough to give you a qualifying year for Pension benefits? Or is it? If not, can the top up with voluntary payments?

Thinking about it - topping up would possibly not be worth it as you’d hope they would be able to get 35 years working life/qualifying years after graduating.
If the State Pension is actually still a thing by then!

You're right.

Working ten weeks on minimum wage, paid weekly, would not be enough to give them a full years credit.
Although they could make voluntary payments to fil lthe year it's almost certainly not going to be worth it in the grand scheme of things as they'll have more than enough headroom going forward.

@TrainerBees Each January check your NI contributions for the previous tax year. I usually use the pension forecast option https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension

In Jan 2026 check the 2024/25 tax year. It will show if it’s a full year or a partial year. If it’s a partial year there is a cash figure to make it a full year.

As a pp said if you are confident that you will get the 35 years by pension age you may choose not to pay.
