Single person council tax discount

Hi I have qualified for single person council tax discount for the last year as my daughter was in full time education. She’s just finished A levels and is off to uni in September. The council got in touch and says I have to pay full council tax for the summer between A levels and Uni starting. The guy I spoke to didn’t seem to know what he was talking about so just wanted to check if this is correct? Do I then have to let them know when she goes to uni? And what about Uni holidays? Presumably that’s still full time student? Thanks!

Check your council website.

Ours basically says the student should be exempt so your single person discount still applies, but you have to prove they are in full time education if the uni they attend is outside the county. What a faff.

Have a look at the website. If your says something similar, send an email, with a copy of her offer/ acceptance.

Sorry, no direct experience myself, but this sort of council nonsense just irritates me - different rule every day of the week.

Good luck.

My daughter took a gap year back in the late 90s - deferred her uni place - and spent about 6 weeks at home between finishing A levels and leaving for uni a year later after her travels. I lost my single person discount for the whole year. Still sore about it!

It depends on your council. Ours allows the discount from the end of school/college until a certain date (presumably to allow uni to start so there's no gap in discount)

I am trying to gather information about councils misleading people into forgoing their discount when it should apply until 1st of November if they dont leave school before May.
Did you end up losing the reduction?
