Is there an "expiry date" for student loans?

DH has it in his head that if he isn't earning over the repayment minimum in x amount of years that it just gets wiped out

I think tis urban legend...

I seem to remember that mine will be wiped out if not been paid back by the time I am 50ish or 60ish - can't remember which
