Can you copy pics from internet for use in projects & publicity posters without infringing copyright ? Thinking of such as unacknowledged photos BBC website

Only if the pictures are listed as creative commons license (and you have to check whether the license they have chosen allows commercial and/or derivatives to be made of the photo if you want to use it for a profit/amend the photo in any way).

You can also contact the copyright owner and ask permission to use it.
