Paying in a cheque… no banks in town!

Tumbleweed101 · 27/12/2024 23:56

I received a cheque today for the first time in years. I used to just take them into the bank but my local bank branches have closed down in the local towns. Can you pay them in at a post office - or even online?

Do you have a banking app? I normally pay them in there on the rare chance I get one. It asked me you to take photos of it.

Silvertulips · 27/12/2024 23:58

Banking app or post them.

Tubetrain · 27/12/2024 23:58

You can pay them in on the Barclays app by taking a photo of the front and back of the cheque.

Dobbythechristmaself · 27/12/2024 23:58

Takes seconds on my banking App. First direct but I’d say most have the same.

Microgal · 27/12/2024 23:59

Some atm machines are set up to pay them in.

Do you use a banking app on your phone? Mine allows me to deposit cheques by taking a photo of the cheque and completing a few quick details.

I discovered this for the first time recently when received a cheque for road tax refund, the Halifax banking app takes a photo of it automatically and that's it done, i was suitably impressed but then i am old 🤭

Post offices will pay cheques in for you.

Snorlaxo · 28/12/2024 00:13

I’m with HSBC and can pay by taking a photo of the front and back of the cheque.

Thank you for this post! I've had a cheque that I wasn't sure when I'd have time to bring to a bank. I've just managed to submit it via my Barclays app after seeing this post, and it's worked.
Had absolutely no idea this was possible...

Bjorkdidit · 28/12/2024 04:58

Hopefully you have an account that allows you to pay in using your phone app, if not, try the Post Office but you sometimes need a paying in slip which has caught me out in the past. But it's got to be at least a couple of years or more since I've received a cheque.

IVFmumoftwo · 28/12/2024 06:36

Halifax have a machine you can pay it in.

Richiewoo · 28/12/2024 07:25

You can do it in the banking app

BCBird · 28/12/2024 07:26

I know u can pay in cheques for HSBC at post office

rwalker · 28/12/2024 07:36

I use my app absolutely fantastic SO easy

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 28/12/2024 07:50

Nationwide have a postal address you can send cheques to - cleared quickly. Maybe your bank does as well?

wizzler · 28/12/2024 07:53

If the banking app doesn't work ( creased cheque or value exceeds the limit) I go to my local spar which has a PayPoint where you can pay in . Just need a paying in slip. More convenient then the Post Office as it's open all the time

Cazs818 · 28/12/2024 08:00

Mines monzo can pay checks in vie the app up to £500 any higher you have to post of

Tumbleweed101 · 28/12/2024 09:19

Thanks for the replies. I have a banking app and will give it a go on there when I get up!

Wow I have been carrying a cheque around thinking how am I going to deposit it. It's for a tenner and would cost me 2.00 to park.

Just checked and can do it on Halifax banking app. Fantastic. Everyday is a school day.

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2024 10:07

I either post them or use the ATM in town. I think the Post Office will take them too.

lapuf · 28/12/2024 11:26

Yep Santander have the functionality too on the app

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2024 13:06

Which bank?
You can't pay in a cheque via the Co-op app, but you can at a PO or by post - you need a paying in slip and the appropriate PO/post envelope (you can order these on the Coop website)

Boomer55 · 28/12/2024 17:06

I’m with NatWest - you can take a photo of the cheque on the app.

ACynicalDad · 28/12/2024 18:08

Don't know if they do it now, but nationwide didn't let you pay in through an app so I just have a lloyds account that I can pay cheques in from, haven't used it for years.
