How long for a bank CHAPS transfer to go through?

If someone tells me their bank is arranging a CHAPS transfer to my account at 10am in the morning at what hour that day could I reasonably expect it to arrive in my account?

It can arrive any time up until close of business.

In theory, the CHAPS system runs a sweep every 30 minutes, so if they instruct their bank at 10am, the bank can input it straight into their system and it can make the 10:30 run so your bank should be able to see it in thier account by 10:30, and their system should be automated enough to put it into your account within seconds.
In practice, they instruct their bank, a dopey person behind the counter sits on it for a while, it eventually gets input into the banks system, Somebody else eventually checks and authorises it, then in a retail bank the sytsem is probably set up to sweep transactions into the CHAPS SWIFT feed every hour. then your bank will get it, but somebody will have put reference number into the wrong field so it will require manual intervention so it won't actually show up in your account until after COB when your bank runs it's overnight sweeps. And for that you'll be charged £30.
