Paying twice when switching energy suppliers

So we switched last month when the energy cap thingy rose & Martin Lewis told everyone to! But we had our final bill from previous supplier through one week & then new bill from new supplier the next meaning we're actually out of pocket this month. I really struggle to get my head round energy suppliers billing, can anybody help.. is this normal practice? Or are we being ripped off somewhere along the line.

Did you give a closing meter reading to your old supplier and same day opening meter read to the new one? If so, you can’t be paying twice for the same energy. Just unfortunate timing.

Were all your bills from old supplier estimated or actual (based on meter readings you provided?)

Your final bill might be higher than expected if there was a need to correct based on previous estimated bills.

This explains what happens between companies when you switch.

You won't pay for the same energy twice, but it can take a while for the company you've left to work out your final bill. You would usually get some money back from your old company.

Were you in debit with the first company? They will bill you to clear the arrears. As long as the new company is working to the same meter reading, you won't pay twice for the same energy.
