Am I likely to get tax back?

Hello:)

I've quit my job as of 27 September to take a break from the world of work and support my mum through late-stage parkinsons.

I'm chatting with a few recruiters and applying for jobs - may or may not be back to work in the current tax year. Can anyone advise whether I should apply for tax back/am likely to have overpaid this year to date?

I've tried going through hmrc online process but they make it tricky for people who aren't UK passport holders and the phone wait is v long!

For context my salary was c 95k pa. I'm not claiming any benefits, nor am I intending to. I will be returning to work in the UK when the time comes.

I've never had a gap in employment in 20 odd years so haven't a clue really how it all works.

Thanks for any advice or knowledge you can share.

If you were paid PAYE and not self employed then you will have paid tax from the beginning of the Tax Year on April 5, this tax is based on you working a whole year, so yes, if you are not going to be working before the next tax year, then you should be entitled to a tax rebate for the tax paid from April to September. I filled in a form online after opening an account at Gov.uk. I only worked part time and left a job in February and I got back about £400, so definitely worth a phone call.
