Switch to Octopus or stay with British Gas

Hello,

As the title suggests, I'm considering switching to Octopus Energy. However, last night I was looking at the price per unit/standing charge for each company and there's not that much of a difference. The standing charge for BG is slightly more whereas the price per unit for Octopus is slightly more.

Should I just stay with Octopus or switch to British Gas?

Thanks

Really depends on your circumstances, Martin Lewis has quite a good run down on energy prices and companies. I’m with octopus, we have solar panels and they do the best rates for selling to the grid. Customer service is good and they’ve a nice app.

Ginisatonic · 28/09/2024 10:45

Were you looking at the variable rate? We are on the tracker tariff with octopus for gas and intelligent go for electricity. We have an EV which you need for intelligent go but they have tracker for electricity too.
I think you need to look at other tariffs on offer, including fixed, to see who has the best deal for you.

put the usage details into a comparison site and see moneysavings expert is the one I mainly use. We went to octopus as it was saving us money and fixed so if the cap increased we knew approx what we’d pay. If you want a referral for £50 credit on your account dm me!

I’ve just switched from BG to octopus and my bills have drastically reduced. The customer service from BG was atrocious too.

I like Octopus now but they were shocking when i first moved to them. Never answer emails (they are much better if you call them)

BuzzieLittleBee · 28/09/2024 10:52

Have you got, or are you planning to get an electric car? That's where Octopus come into their own IMO.

General90 · 28/09/2024 10:53

I used to be with British Gas. Now with octopus and their customer service is amazing. They also do some discounted/free offers such as a Cafe Nero or Greggs drink each week.

if you sign up using a referral link, you can get £50 account credit too 🙂

Thanks everyone.

I'd want to pay as I go as that works for me to keep track of our bills and finances.

Does anyone know if there any good for pay as you go? Would I see any difference in comparison to British Gas?

Thanks

Pop your details into Uswitch, my current tarrif with British Gas is better than anything Octopus is offering at the moment.

We are just billed monthly by Octopus. We do have a direct debit which I think they insist on but we don’t pay a fixed amount so are never in credit - or debit.

Whether you will notice a difference in cost to British Gas depends on what tariff you are on and the tariff that you might choose at Octopus.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 29/09/2024 15:03

When you say pay as you go do you mean prepayment with a smart meter, or pay the bill each month for exact usage rather than a fixed direct debit?

If the former I'd go with anyone but British Gas or Utilita.

If the latter Octopus is a better option than British Gas.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 29/09/2024 15:03

Also if you mean prepay EDF have a good tariff at the moment.

OneSnugSheep · 22/02/2025 12:57

Octopus is great! Was using British Gas at first and even after paying about £220 - £240 monthly to credit the account. They then sent a bill of £533 saying it’s my quarterly bill!!!
Had to switch immediately to octopus
