Would you recommend your bank? I need to switch current accounts

Utterly fed up with Natwest. When the app doesn't work (a frequent occurrence) there is no technical support and customer services can't help because some things can ONLY be done via app and not over the phone.

Can anyone recommend a good bank? I don't mind if things go wrong with tech as long as they provide customer service when it does.

I have an account with TSB and an account with First Direct.

TSB's app always works, I can't remember an occasion that it hasn't but it's rubbish for uploading cheques and it doesn't have a great system for searching through your transactions.

I don't use First Direct much but I'm able to upload cheques quickly and easily (although not something I do often tbf) and I think the app is easy to navigate.

I've been with First Direct for 10+ years with no problems.

I’ve been with them 25 years. Found them excellent.

Definitely recommend First Direct. Been with them since they first started. Can't fault them. Also Santander - been with them since the 80's when they were Abbey National. Santander gave me a much needed mortgage in no time at all. Even my mortgage advisor was shocked at how quick it went through.

Chase.

Great app, impeccable service, good interest rates and cheap abroad

LaWench · 03/08/2024 15:38

I have current accounts with most banks. My absolute favourite is Chase. Cashback on debit card spend, the app is fantastic and so easy to use. Good interest rates on savings. Santander and Halifax are my next favourites, both of these net me £25pm in cashback and rewards. I don't use my HSBC, Lloyds, Natwest, Monzo or Metro accounts.

I hated Barclays and TSB, couldn't get rid of those fast enough.

KezzabellaB · 03/08/2024 15:42

First Direct. Got a staff account when I started there in 1996, worked there for 17 years and still kept the account when they made me redundant so they must still be doing something right 🤣

RainintheDesert · 03/08/2024 16:16

Nationwide. Their app changed this year which I've struggled with a bit but otherwise I've rarely need to hassle them about anything. And if I do need help I can send a message and it usually gets sorted quickly.

worldwidetravel2017 · 03/08/2024 16:40

First direct = ace
Got a switching bonus from them too

Barclays have a switch deal on atm - im switching an acc from Halifax to them this month for switch bonus

Another vote for Chase. Really smooth, efficient and sleek

30 odd years ago we switched our current account and mortgage to a Virgin One Account, which felt streets ahead of our old separate accounts, abd enable us to reduce the amount we paid for our mortgage, we were self employed and business was heavily loaded to Christmas, so all the Christmas money covered all our mortgage until we ran out in July ish, meaning we only owed on our mortgage for 6 months of the year. When the mortgage period came to an end we had to close the account, it was owned by RBS by then and they couldn't offer us anything more than a normal current account. We started to open a joint account with First Direct, but 6 weeks after applying they still hadn't started to open the account, so we cancelled. We then looked to open an account with Starling. They are brilliant. Took only a few hours from applying to the account opening. They give interest on balances of over 3%. They do not charge for use in Europe, and give excellent exchange rates, €1.18 to the £ in Spain last month. They also don't charge for withdrawals from some ATMs in Europe. The app is very user friendly, and you can access via a computer if you want. Only had to call them a couple of times, but they always answered quickly and sorted out the issue quickly. We feel the same as we did 30 years ago when we started with Virgin. They seem light years ahead of what we had before. Highly recommended.
