Turning your life around financially

Looking for heartening tales of how you turned your financial situation around in late 30s. I'm nearing 40, waring 35k and just finding it hard to save, put away for a pension etc. I've been out of the job market for a long time too (student) so really feel like I need to play catch up. Feels so depressing looking at my meager savings...anyone been in position and managed to get on a better footing?

I take it you’ve gone through your outgoings with a fine tooth comb to see what you can get rid of and get better deals for?

If so then it’s a matter of increasing hours or get a better paid job or second one - is this possible? Last year I picked up overtime shifts to clear my debt of £1.1K debt, it was done in five months.

Are you paying off any unsecured debt?

Yes. Spent my 20s messing around and my 30s parenting/not working/working PT. In my 40s I’ve worked out a monthly spending and saving plan and I track my net worth quarterly. I did my April numbers the other day and my net worth has gone up by £8.4k since Jan, and I’m not a high earner. I’m a total budget freak now…happy to have a look at your numbers via DM if you like.

Although…am I reading your post correctly? You don’t currently work and you are a student?
