PREMIUM BONDS. APRIL 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/04/2024 15:09

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1860 in prizes

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,860

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

There are 3 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

White - main one with info 😄😄😄

Blue - those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

But I won last month and didn't show anything the day before so not sure it shows for all

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Any further thoughts on the changing of the pic just before the draw?
Mine changed to Juliane Moore holding flowers and I won £100 with the same pic yesterday.
I won last month too 😃
It happened once before and I won that time too.
I know some have said there’s no connection…

I didn't have a picture and won 200 and DH did have a picture and won100. I won last month and DH did not. Don't think that helps at all!

elkiedee · 05/04/2024 03:04

Well, I got nothing in my first draw but then I only had £100 worth of bonds, will be £150 next month but I don't really expect to be winning much. I'm keeping most of my money in ISAs but enjoying earning interest rather than paying it, as my dad very generously helped me to clear my debts, and treating the bonds as a small flutter without totally chucking the money away.

SaveThisUsername · 05/04/2024 16:16

£25 for me with around £15k holdings, and £75 for daughter with around £6k holdings. She seems to be very lucky, she's won 4 out of the last 7 months.

Listeningtogold · 06/04/2024 00:25

This was my first draw, I have £5k and won £25.
I only received the email to say I'd won at 11.25pm tonight

Heliss · 06/04/2024 11:09

I got £100 on £4k. About time too - I held £7k for the last year (just reduced it to £4k last month) and only won about £150 with it.

MercyChant66 · 06/04/2024 14:45

It’s really good to see people winning on such small holdings - I had about £400 in holdings for over 50 years and didn’t win a single penny until I had FH - and even now, I often win nothing or £25! As a previous poster said, luck is a funny thing. I know it’s a mathematical concept but sometimes it does feel a bit personal 😀!

DelilahJane · 06/04/2024 16:59

Nada this month for us. But I'm still delighted with my £100 from last month

Yes nice to see others apart from me win on small holdings

Ans weirder that many with fh so 50 000 tickets don't win some months

agree with you - it does feel personal! I always say to dh I wonder if our numbers actually are in the draw. Especially when on FH you get zero whereas other people win 4 or 5 prizes on less

Pemba · 07/04/2024 13:54

It is weird, I agree. I have almost full holdings and had a time, I think back in 2022, where I won nothing at all for 3 months in a row! I kept the faith though, and recently calculated my return rate to be 5.2% over the last year, which is fine by me. Never won over £100 on an individual prize though.

I do think it is discouraging for those with smaller holdings to get nothing at all month after month. Maybe there should be smaller prizes available like £5 even, to keep them interested? Would that even work?

I am conscious that the current situation seems weighted towards those with full holdings which seems a bit unfair. Things will be different for me when I cash in mine next year to buy our house.

Pemba · 07/04/2024 14:32

Actually that wouldn't work would it? I am no mathematician but I think the larger holders would hoover up the £5 prizes too, according to the laws of probability? Unless there was a separate draw for lower level holders, but where do you draw the line? Hmm.

But someone with £500 in there or less probably doesn't mind the flutter, but someone with say £5000, well that's a decent chunk of money and it must be annoying to win nothing for a year when they will know they could easily have got £250 if they'd have kept it in a savings account, at current rates.

Wrapunzel · 07/04/2024 15:45

Agreed it would still skew to larger holdings! I think it's a mistake to think about the effective prize rate as the mean average isn't representative as so skewed by the larger prizes. Better way to think about it is the 1/22,000 chance of a prize in each draw. My holdings are £23k so I should win every month Hmm I do not Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/04/2024 18:56

Yes it's a gamble to keep fh or maybe anything over 25k in and win nothing

Knowing you could have had £1800 I think in interest if have £50k
in an account

For me it's the thrill of what if .....

I doubt I will win A million

Or even be lucky enough to win £100k or £50k or £25k

But all the little £25 or £100 or like this month £500 is amazing

I've always said I couldn't imagine having £50k so fh but if I did then yes I would keep them in pb rather then get over a grand in interest

I have £3.5k ..i won £25 in jan and £75 in March…so happy to keep them at least another year ..feel I’ve broken even so to speak…waiting for ‘3rd time lucky’ win!

SB1971 · 08/04/2024 10:13

I haven’t had my winnings yet into my account -is it later because of Easter do we think?

MercyChant66 · 08/04/2024 10:34

Apropos of dreaming of big wins, I just wanted to thank the earlier poster who mentioned that At Home with the Braithwaites is on ITVX - I missed it first time round and I'm really enjoying it!

They say 7 working days.

Haven’t checked today, but mine weren’t through last week.

It usually arrives on the 8th or 9th IME. I saw mine in 'pending' on my account, that means tomorrow.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/04/2024 15:27

I'm pleasantly surprised that any winnings reinvested go straight into the next draw. I'd assumed that they would have to sit there for a month like bonds you newly buy before they qualified.

WearyAuldWumman · 08/04/2024 16:00

Still not through for me, but that's not 7 working days yet.

NewYearNewJob2024 · 08/04/2024 18:38

I can see mine pending with tomorrow as clearing!

Keep checking my account because I can't believe it

I've won £25,000 😊

Congrats! What a lovely surprise!!

EachandEveryone · 09/04/2024 11:36

Ok you lot have persuaded me. Ive got a lump some took early retirement although im still working. Ive taken advice and maxed out my ISAs and bought a bond. Ive got £20,000 left. I was going to try premium bonds for a year for now. So, how do I start? Im abit confused by this app you keep on checking? All the different colours. Do they contact you if you win?
