Rejected mortgage in principle

My partner and I have just been rejected for a mortgage in principle, we think because he has a CCJ which ends in July. However he did previously have an agreement in principle with his own bank, after calling and having a conversation with them. This was in the middle of the CCJ term.

I have just got one in principle on my salary alone as a test, which would cover what we want to buy.

He earns £20k more than me but is also nearly 50.

Is our best bet to go to his bank for a conversation - difficult as it's RBS and they have no branches. Also scarily difficult to actually speak to anyone at a branch!

We can't just wait for the CCJ to end as we know landlord is selling this year. Also would like to know if there is any other issue than the CCJ - his credit rating is in the middle.

Have you tried going through a mortgage broker like London and country to help you find an appropriate lender?

Another vote for using a broker here, wouldn't recommend the one other poster mentions but this is what brokers are for OP, something will be possible!
