PREMIUM BONDS FEB 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/02/2024 19:27

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff if I’ve missed anything out

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 each time so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k x 2/3/4

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1860 in prizes

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,860

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 3 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

White - main one with info 😄😄😄

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Should be noted that if you are lucky enough to have full holdings you won’t see anything in the blue app even if you have won as that only shows reinvested prizes.

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

125 on FH

Total of £400 for 2024 so far. 8% tax free, currently.

For me, the fact this is tax free is a major draw, plus the chance of winning big.

Eaumyword · 02/02/2024 08:15

£150 on 2.5FH.
I'm more grumpy about the total lost night's sleep due to the app glitching and DH feverishly refreshing!
I also must stop checking the big winner's list as I was quietly sooo excited at £5k going to someone in our county, on the date we bought our PB's and with the beginning of our bond numbers. I really thought it was our turn finally...
Well done to the big winners 🥳

Blueberrycreampie · 02/02/2024 08:15

£150 for me today - happy with that. Can't remember how much is in there but over £30,000 I think! Congratulations to everyone else who's won!

WobblyLondoner · 02/02/2024 08:15

£250 for me on FH, £0 for DS & DP on much less. Other family member won £650!

passingthru · 02/02/2024 08:17

on a bit of a good luck run - 1600 in dec, 150 in jan and now 300. 38k in the pot. expecting not much else this year now

CaveMum · 02/02/2024 08:23

Congrats @PeanutAndBanana

@Boomboom22 if you’ve maxed out £85k in another institution then yes. There is no upper limit on savings with NS&I, though the max amount an individual can hold in PBs is £50k.

PBs are useful for high rate taxpayers who have already maxed out their ISA allowance as the prizes are tax free.

They’re actually good for anyone who will exceed their tax free savings interest limit (£1000 per year for basic rate tax payers or £500 for high rate).

When interest rates were low in recent years you needed a lot in savings to exceed £1000 in interest (based on a savings rate of 1.5% you’d need about £67k in savings to exceed that).

Now that you can easily get 4-5% you need much less (£22,500 at 4.5% will earn £1012 in interest) so many more people will find they’re paying tax on their interest.

Of course there are no guarantees with what you’ll get back with PBs, but the fun is that you could win big. If you’ve maxed out ISAs and also have money in other high interest accounts it can be a fun option.

Scabber · 02/02/2024 08:23

Nothing again :(

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2024 08:31

Well done @PeanutAndBanana This months highest winner so far

@Boomboom22 £50k is the most one person can have.

Yes winning obv isn't guaranteed and can earn more interest in an account

But

Always a chance May win £1000 + one month which would then be the same as winning/earning interest

Boomboom22 · 02/02/2024 07:32

So it's basically a way to keep extra money above 85k bank guarantee safe? As judging by all the posts so far the returns are not as good or stable as savings interest.

No you can keep amounts over £85k safe by using completely different banks.

For me I have £20k in savings which earns over £1k in interest per year and anything over £1k you pay tax on so I also have £20k in premium bonds as the winnings aren't taxable..

The premium bond £20k will be going into an ISA in April which will be tax free.

Pablosdog · 02/02/2024 08:41

£25 for me on 10k holdings

LemonShirts · 02/02/2024 08:44

£125 on FH me
£250 on FH dh
nothing for DD ON 6k

DH is frustrated with it but we consistently win every month, not just anything big. Always around £1-200

CaveMum · 02/02/2024 08:56

Just want to make sure that people are aware you can check multiple accounts on the Cream App. As long as you have their permission (obviously) you can add other people’s accounts. Just click on “Bond Holders” at the bottom of the screen then enter the person’s PB holder’s number.

thecatsthecats · 02/02/2024 08:57

£300 on 40k. £100 and £50 prizes.

That's a win every month but one since December 2022, including a £10k last year and £1250 last month.

Sunday12 · 02/02/2024 09:00

Thank you for the thread

i won 50; 50; 100

im always hoping for more but at least I’ve won something! I’ll keep my money in PB for another 6 months and see how I go. Very new to this but will need money soon as I’m in difficulty with housing.

good luck to everyone here!

JellyBeanFactory · 02/02/2024 09:07

£150 on FH.

At least it's a short(er) month until the next draw!

I’m fairly new to PB. Started at the end of last year- I find I’m living from month to month just waiting for a win- checking how many days until the draw throughout the month. So happy to read your post but also feel I’m wishing time away!

Okki · 02/02/2024 09:25

I've won nothing since May 2023. However I did take most of it out in Sept and put in a high interest. I've now got £2k in and am putting in £25 a month. Still like the fact I have a chance. I am attempting reverse psychology now and am going to see if I can make it to Sept 24 without winning anything. I rather suspect I'll succeed 🤣

letsbepositive2024 · 02/02/2024 09:31

£50 on 7k investment
£100 on 12k investment for DD

like many, I've moved bulk of funds to locked in interest and use the bonds for accessible funds

Cowhen · 02/02/2024 09:45

Nothing here on about 6k.

WhatHaveIFound · 02/02/2024 09:50

£175 for me this month plus £300 for DH.
