My dear friend (very responsible job in the Arts) is having a terrible time being bullied and harassed.

I urged her to get in contact with her union as i have been through a tough time with work recently (NHS) and my union, Unite, have been fantastic.

She claims not to have one though. This can't be right surely?

she might not have a recognised organised union in her workplace but she has a right to join a union and once she has done that she can seek legal advice from them, which will be free. HOWEVER, some unions are reluctant to provide actual support - like an adviser coming into meetings with the staff member and managemetn for example, when the problem occurred BEFORE the union membership was sought - the thinking being that everyone should join a union becasue of the principle of solidarity, not because they are in trouble and need a bit of help.

Fair enough.
However I joined mine after the shit hit the fan and they were utterly fab and never mentioned it.

brilliant - i think that is the right approacj, but just make sure that before your freind joins the relevant union, she makes sure that is not their policy - gmb stick to it like glue, so make sure she joins one that is more helpful"!
